Woah to. Welcome to the new best rivalry in baseball. Hello, everybody. Welcome to ninety miles podcast Wrigley field to Miller park ninety miles. That’s what we’re all about. Here course, the cubs are better than the brewers. I’ve also little nutty today. Wrong. Well, that’s true. Yeah. Yeah. Feel nutty because Jesse here for some reason thinks brewers are better than the cubs. And that’s just the most crazy thing I’ve ever heard. Well, there’s a lot of people that would agree with you. But they’re all wrong too. So now, right. Yeah. Because you’re also right all the time at least half of it. Unless you talk to my wife, but she doesn’t listen to the program. So that’s okay. Oh, yeah. Well, good things. He doesn’t cause. Yeah. Yes. She’s with the vast majority of the world that doesn’t listen to the program. You know? Yeah. Yeah. Probably about seven billion people that don’t. But that’s okay. We’ll get there. Eventually. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So that’s fine. So yeah, welcome to the show. And you just heard some music in the opening we we thought we would mention about the you know, it’s opening day coming up. So we’re we thought we mentioned the opening theme. That’s right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It’s finally finally here. Can’t believe it. That’s yeah. This is episode seven seven episodes before even start the season. And it’s been it’s been a blast so far. This is awesome. I’m having a yeah. Really? It was a nice we had a good spring training of podcast episodes. And you know, now we’re prepared for the regular season, which is is really gonna get fun. Yes. A lot to talk about once we get into the season. But we’ve had a lot of fun. And and a lot to talk about in these first seven episodes anyways through the spring like absolutely out, and you mentioning you remained in the theme song. Yeah. Yeah. Usually have running theme kind of for the episode, but something when we decided to do this, and we’ll keep this fairly brief up front. But when we decided to do this. We actually got your brother Robin involved, Robin wraps who has an excellent website on drums and performance. You also, of course, as a composer myself as a musician, as well, we are if you didn’t know musicians, and the three of us actually recorded the theme song for this has been a lot of legwork on the backside that we haven’t presented before we just wanted to share with you. If you love the theme song, that’s cool. If you go subscribe and get on the Email list by the end of this Bruce cub series next weekend. Not this coming weekend. We’re gonna give you the MP three for free of the theme song you can roll around. No blasted it out the windows at the tailgate. Yeah. Whatever. Okay. Maybe not. But it’s cool. If you like it, it’s just something we want you guys to be able to have if you’re into cool. Yeah. Go ahead. Just go to ninety miles podcast dot com. There’s a subscribe Lincoln the top right click there and sign up. Let us know what you want to hear about. And if you’re on the mailing list by the conclusion of that first cubs brewers series. We will send you them P three or a link to it. So you can grab it. Download it and listen to it whenever you want because we know you want to won’t have. It’s the reason they listen is really for that opening fifteen seconds. I’m sure oh, yeah. Yeah. Sure. We did want to little bit of the story about it too. Didn’t we didn’t you when we went to Wrigley number years ago? The the bucket brigade outside right? Yeah. Yeah. You got usually have with the plastic buckets doing some drumming outside Wrigley field. That’s you know, that’s a pretty common thing. And and it’s you know, so there’s that sound and then you brought in in the guitar and we decided kind of meld the twos. It sort of a combination of of I guess you could say kind of a combination of Wrigley field atmosphere and Miller park atmosphere in a way, that’s a that’s a that’s what we’re going for. Yeah. I think it came off. Okay. And the cool part is if you think about opening day at Wrigley opening day at Miller park. There’s tons of music. You’re going to have the bucket. So you’re gonna have people with guitars out plan singing. It’s a party atmosphere. It’s a blast. And it’s just such an exciting day in the season. It’s basically Christmas for all the big time. Baseball fans, right? Most people are taking the day off, you know, getting out a word, unfortunately, I had no way to get out of my day job. And I will be you know at work, but I will be recording the game. It’s gonna be a blast. But yeah, we just wanted to touch on.
00:05:02 – 00:10:00
It is something that we have some time in effort into kind of whipped it done. But it was fun. And we we shoot out, you know, and you can pick what you want us of scribe to what you wanna hear about. Obviously, you’ll hear about new podcast episodes. But also new blogs Jesse just wrote one. Yeah. I kind of talk. We’ll talk about. Yeah. Yeah. We’ll be talking about that in the tweet of the week segment with some some phone with that Jesse stepped in a big pile of doodoo with thinking he knows what he’s talking about when he doesn’t. But well, that’s that. That’s Twitter for sure. And then we’ll certainly be talking, you know, about opening day Rosser ‘s who’s who’s gonna be there opening day who’s not and all that stuff as well. As some injuries will make some more predictions. We’re gonna keep it on the cubs brewers series yet again. So we’re just gonna turn the heat up on that opening series, which is going to be fun. And I’m so glad that the cubs and Burs play other so early. Oh, yeah. That’s gonna be. It’s a. Yeah. That’s the atmosphere at those games. We’ve been to a couple our selves is fantastic. It’s maybe not the most kid-friendly all the time. You know? But yeah, it’s usually it’s usually pretty wild. And I know it gets a little more heated than usual. Right. It’s not for every fan the cubs brewers series. But it is it is one that everybody watches from home. If they’re not getting tickets to it because this is this is the rivalry. This is the new rivalry in central. This is you know, as we kind of use hyperbole in the open to say, it’s the new best rivalry and baseball. You know, that’s a little over the top. But it’s an honor rivalry. And we’re we’re just happy to jump in and be able to play a part in your experience of it. And that’s what this is about. Yeah, we will also on some opening day history. Seventh-inning radio, right? Do something. We’re gonna touch on just a little opening day history. Just kind of some fun stories about it. It will be a pretty late episode in some ways as far as getting into the details. But I think it’s going to be a fun one. So yeah. Yeah. Should be good. So let’s jump right in. I guess. Yeah. Okay. Well, do you want me to lead it off? Or you’re going to take the lead on this one. All right. Sure. So we did a couple of predictions that necessarily hardcore ones, but we’ve discussed the pitching staff, especially for Milwaukee about three episodes ago. This is upset seven. So I think it was four or five to a pitching staff breakdown during that episode. I was really hoping the brewers would get a left handed. Carter things were looking a little bit shakey in some ways. But I did also say at that point if they don’t go out and get a kaikal or a GIO Gonzalez, which at this point, you know, Geos already signed signed with the Yankees kaikal is still unsigned. As is another reliever. We’ll get to in a bit. But they didn’t bring that lefty. And what I had said if they don’t you’re probably looking at potentially all three young guns being in that starting rotation. Well, here we are. And Craig counsel has basically set up his roster. You’re starting rotation. Has you leash ASEAN in it? Then followed by Freddie, Peralta. Brandon Woodruff Corbin burns Zach Davies so pretty much fell. How I thought it might if they didn’t bring in the lefty, I’m really excited about Woodruff. I think he’s looked great. And in spring training. I know some Bruce fans always seem to want to bring them out of the bullpen. He was a starter coming up. He’s got the stuff to be a starter. He pitched well in that dodger series last year for four innings. I’m not really sure what the why there’s so much not hate. But just like, oh we want him to come out of the bullpen. Well, I think he’s action more suited to be a starter. I’d rather see, you know, if you’re gonna have one of those guys come out. I’d rather it be maybe Peralta. He’s only got two great pitches. But in the long run we’ve got a starting rotation. That is young. It’s exciting. It also means it’s a little dangerous rate. So you don’t know exactly what you’re gonna get. But I thought that was interesting at the minimum. I’m pretty excited about the youth that they have coming up. What do you think about three guys starting? I think that’s great. I think that gives the cubs an excellent opportunity to score a boatload runs in that first series and still likely be on them recalled they struggled against all three of those guys last year. But maybe that’s my memory. I do remember was a different. A different. Season two different year. And let’s you know, couple of the different phases in the lineup as well. So we’ll we going to hear about healthy Kris Bryant today’s that we’re going for again. Well. Brian all day. It’s oh, yeah. Well, that’s a big difference for sure. But, but yeah, you know, that’s I guess, you know, since you’re talking about the starters.
00:10:00 – 00:15:01
I just want to mention something to the cubs. You know, of course, kind of got their rotation down now. And it’s it’s looking like while they do play three games in Texas, which I think in a previous episode. I may have made a mistake. Yeah. Thought I’d Brealey match. So little. Over a month ago, but we are not professional. No, we’re not definitely not, and you know over month ago, we just moved into a new place and out in the country. And and it’s it’s been a chore getting internet here. So I I’ve been doing most of our pre episode, you know, research and stuff on my phone, which is a little cumbersome and makes me prone to make mistakes. So I somehow was thinking the cubs Burs sees we’d be seeing one two and three from the rotation somehow missing one of the games that the cubs play against Texas. So so it is okay. Yeah. Yeah. So it’s going to be probably two three four against Milwaukee. Which is which is fine. I mean, but yeah, I’m going to own that mistake. And I’m also a, you know, give the excuse of of being having a computer to research on and. That’s why you know. You’re a cubs fan. If you didn’t have an excuse. I would be shocked. So oh, yeah. Okay. Well, well, it’s good for seeing two three four one two three. I don’t know that it would’ve mattered. I just thought it was odd. When we talked about it that the brewers we’re going to have. Yeah. Seven games books, and you’re gonna see the three four five guys against the cubs. This makes it a little more. You’re right. I like that two versus three three four five. Yeah. That’s likely gonna be be the situation there. Yep. I am a little bit about the number five for the Bruce zek Davies has had some interesting things going on this year. No, he’s been knocked around a bit in spring training. He wasn’t the same guy who was two years ago last season either do his list his last spring training. Start was against the team that he’s gonna be starting against again this week so the reds specifically. So he basically threw nothing but fastballs and that’s last spring training start when he got knocked around. We’ll see. What he’s really got the rotate isn’t as deep as we like. But there’s a young man named Zac Brown that made some starts. He was the brewers. Minor league pitcher of the year last year, and he may be seeing the rotation sooner than later. Of course, there’s the Jimmy Nelson saga that continues. Speaking of Jimmy, Nelson, one of our Twitter acquaintances, actually, you know, friend of ours on Twitter brew maths. He did a great article. There’s a great article on his weds website Broumand, not GAM that really tears apart. The Jimmy Nelson injury goes on kind of deep dive. It’s a really good read check that out. But I I’m hoping that Nelson, you know, it’s just kicking the rust off and getting rid of some, you know, some scar tissue and things like that. That’s what homes for the soreness. He did have an excellent outing three inning outing before he got shut down for few days again. So there’s still plenty of room for the bruise basic starting staff. To change throughout the course of the Jimmy Nelson. He can just kinda somehow get that scar tissue out of his arm onto the baseball. And then throw it at the cubs lineup that that’ll take care of it. They’ll knock both the scarf issue and the and the leather off the ball. So it’ll be everybody. But sure when that happens, so whatever. Oh, okay. Well, yeah, I well the Schroer. Yeah. That goes back know. Prediction, but it’s it’ll be everybody including especially or so. Sure it will. But you know, I just mentioned in the cubs rotation. So they so, you know, it is going to be Lester Darvish hamels Hendricks, and then cantata so most likely it’s going to be you know, Darvish hamels Hendrix. For the brewers series. Okay. Okay. So yeah, I think Hendricks Henry says given the brewers some trouble in the past. Well, you know, I. Well. Can contain a more. So yeah, I know you don’t have internet. But did you see the cubs did extend Kyle Hendricks, right? Yes. Oh, yeah. He seems like dark completely. I still have cell phone service. Could be a week. Sweep the cubs. I don’t want you to be having hard feelings. Oh, yeah.
00:15:01 – 00:20:04
Yeah. Well, nice Hendricks Hendrix, Scott a four year extension. So he’s going to be through two thousand twenty three with a team option for twenty four. So I I love that. I think that’s great. He obviously feels very comfortable in Chicago. And and I’m glad they’re able to get that done. It’s interesting. We continue to see extensions. It’s it’s rights. True. Quite interesting that that trend which well theories about that. But we’ll get into that more in further episodes. But it’s the free agency market has scared. A few people in the saying, you know, what I’m just gonna take. What’s there? You know, the air Nado extension the Mike. Trout extension. Wasn’t exactly a light one. That was a one. But yeah, it’s it’s been interesting to see how that’s Plato anything on a cover on the opening day theme. The opening of the. Episode. The theme song we’ve covered all of that stuff. Anything over that? I wanted to. I think the only other I guess talk a little bit about the lineup for the cubs. Okay. And the the roster. I, you know, a couple of things worth noting. Ian hap- was demoted to AAA to start the season. After last year. You know, he was he was on the opening day lineup and actually hit a home run. Yeah. To start the season. But this year he’ll be starting in triple A. I, you know, he’s young. He’s still developing. I think being sort of I think in a way they’re the need for him to be up, and then kind of playing sort of platoon and roll and stuff it didn’t allow him to develop as much. He still has development that he needs to do. And and I think it’s better. He’s gonna get a lot more at bats down in triple A. Obviously. And we’ll see I mean, I don’t think he’ll be around this season. I I don’t have any doubts about that. But he, you know, he’s still young. I’m not, you know, I I like him a lot. So I I hope you know, he can get some things in order. But he he did have some trouble last season. And and he’s just he just he’s a develop some more. He needs more at bats. So that’s that’s fine. That’s a big development. And because of that marks goons who had a great great spring. He he’ll he’ll be up there on the major league roster to start the season. So you know, that’s so a little bit of a dark horse candidate made the club and half is going down to. Yeah. Well, he he had a credible spring. You know, he had let’s see. Forty six at bats. You know? So a pretty good amount of time spring training any bad at three seventy a one point two. Oh, five Opie s hit four home runs. Fifteen RBI’s yet. Great great spray. I mean, he earned it. I mean, absolute fantastic. Where is he going to be in the everyday lineup or coming off the bench, where do you foresee him? Well, he’ll be he’ll be available. You know as a kind of the fourth outfielder and off the bench shirts. Brewer fans won’t be terribly familiar. That’s a new name for a lot of us. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He, you know, it’s going to be interesting because he yeah. It was a surprise. You know, no one thought that that would happen. But with hap- going down and makes sense. And what’s, you know? He can he can play left and right field. What what’s interesting about that? Is is actually it’s probably gonna mean Elbert or a junior who else had a great spring. He will probably be playing center. Okay. Very quickly. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah. And and I like that I like Elmore on center, he is a fantastic fielder. My God, I saw some stat he made more. What was it more plays? That were are unlikely to be made in centerfield than anyone else in the majors last year, something like that. I, you know, I gotta look I that just crossed my mind now, and I can’t remember the specifics. But when you get internet, you can figure that out for us. Yeah. No. Pull up pull up some of you know, highlights of Elmore on centerfield last year. And it is the dives and the balls he gets to. It’s unbelievable. He is an incredible outfielder. I I like him a lot center and he had a great a great spring. And he’s you know, I I was hearing he came into camp. I guess in you know, best shape he’s ever been. Of course, you know, kinda everyone says that, but I mean, he really he really worked out offseason he really came in.
00:20:05 – 00:25:04
And I I mean, I know he’s for sure vying, I mean, he should really be the everyday center fielder. I think what’s going to happen is you are gonna sometimes see Hayward in center who he can certainly play centerfield. And that’s where you might. You know, you could see Bryant you know, in left field at times. And and you know, but I think most of the time you’re gonna see shorter. Left L Maura Santer and Hayward, and right and then with zoo, goodness and Bryant, and and kind of swapping out, you know, with Madden playing match ups. Like, he does come see some of that. But. Oh, I’m so that’s a change. That’s new. That’s new so worth noting. Yeah. Absolutely. As far as the brewers go. There wasn’t much for battles left to be had on their roster kinda Lehto. How you figured it. Would if you take a look your grand all Pena battery behind, you know, behind the plate that aircraft’s didn’t have space. So he’s been traded to the giants for AA. Infielder said to see Kratz go, obviously, he was the last year. But when you sign a guy like yes money grand doll. It’s gonna be tough to make the roster. Manny Pena between. Really is the he is the better player. It’s just Kratz has everybody’s heart because man who can’t root for a guy. That’s thirty eight thirty nine making his first playoff starts and Pierce’s. That was an awesome story. We wish him the best in San Francisco from all Abreu nation for sure the only kind of thing that there may have been a little bit of a battle over would have been maybe Spanneberg or sell a Dino possibly making the roster that have been gamble who they traded to Mingo Santana four from the Mariners gamble performed very well, very solidly and spring. You know, hitting the to sixties believe over spring training, but he provides that fourth out fielder. And when you’ve got Ryan Braun in your outfield as good as he can be. He is also a little injury prone. He needs his days off you wanna true fourth outfielder. So it kind of played out how you would have thought it would. Right. So that’s kind of the only real wrap up there. I know we’ve got some other things to cover in the pitching staff of the bruised. But that’s going to be after our tweet of the week. Business. I think. Yeah. Let’s should we get to tweet of the week. Do we have to? Yes, we do to be a little barris this time around, you know. When you have the internet and you get on Twitter. You’re having fun. You know, you see some predictions things like that it as a fan. Maybe I’m getting a little tired of everybody putting them behind the cubs and cardinals again this year, even though they’ve exceeded expectations for basically three seasons running. Anyway, we mentioned brew maths dot com. Well, the to Twitter handle at brew underscore math with an asset the Android brew maths. You know, he has some great articles that get really into the analytics for the brewers player. So I’ve been following for a while anyhow posted on Twitter brew maths was upset when he when we saw CBS sports predictions for the twenty nineteen MLB season left. But then there’s a picture here with their twenty eighteen and twenty nineteen predictions. Very similar looking. We looked at their predictions from last year, right? Feeling much better now linked to their increasingly predictable mishaps, and it links to CBS sports. Well, I am a little tired of everybody. Putting the Bruce behind the cubs and cardinals. I mean, everybody, right. It’s one thing when it’s like, okay half, the raiders are putting them third half or putting him second half. You know, whatever that makes sense. But literally every right around the staff all five of them had the brewers in third with the cardinals and cubs mixing it up and first and second, I just got frustrated, right? I had a little bit of a Twitter tweak. And this is what I responded with. Never going to be respected can’t wait to rant and all these ridiculous writers for the last couple years on the ninety miles podcast. Come seasons. End I need to start saving this stuff. Well, I didn’t really expect any other writers ever see that. Right. I’m just you know, I’m at Bruecker winning three hundred and eighty followers. We just talk about the cubs and brewers and never thought this would get back to anybody with a blue check. did Matt Snyder CBS, right? The handle Matt Snyder CBS this is one of the raiders basically said, you know, what he didn’t say it in. So many words, but you know, what you wanna be a jerk like that do your own. And then we’ll compare that’s pretty much how it went. So I got called out on Matt Snyder. Do your own the entire thing. We can compare. I’m accountable come the end of the season. Well, okay. So there I stepped in it. Peeved a blue check. And, you know, well, whatever salt for fun. That’s the idea anyway. But yeah, I guess they got a little sensitive about and I don’t blame them.
00:25:04 – 00:30:05
People always come at you with your predictions and things like that. And they have to do these. It’s part of their gig. It’s not necessarily their favorite thing to do either. They have to put something it’s really impossible to predict bad to that level. Well, that’s what I yeah. But how come all the brewers third? Well, well, yeah. I mean, that’s I mean, I at least I’ve been nice enough to put the brewers second. But I’m not doing that to promote. Anything? Well, being smart enough to see that the bruiser better than the cardinals. When very few other people did now, you’re just being did. Okay. Okay. I did. I okay. I agree with that. Yes. All year last year. I said the brewers are better than the cardinals. And they were so that’s fine. And I’m saying that again this year, although I could see I could see how most people look in out to in. Like, I, you know. I mean, the cardinals really improved in off-season. I sure we’ve talked about it. They’re definitely scary. But you know, did they improve enough automatic finish ahead of Milwaukee. No, Milwaukee said. What I think would be more accurate looking at their, you know, at their predictions would be cubs. And I all the way across the board. And then the brewers cardinals, you know, maybe second to three hard to say that would have been more accurate. I do like them. Most of them had the reds in fourth. I agree with that. Right. From you in that. Yeah. Well, actually, I stepped in it a little bit in that same chain mentioning. Again. We’ll snafu with the the whole internet blame the internet. That’s right. You know, organic you could blame Canada. The I somehow mis mis read and and mentioned David bell as coming in midseason last year on the reds and writing the ship where it which I I will own that mistake. That’s not true. Of course, he came in the offseason. Right. And it was early in the morning, and I was on my phone trying to see. But anyways, I do think the reds are gonna win a lot more games last year. And you know, but yeah, that it’s a fun tweet. It’s interesting. It certainly, you know, stirred some debate. And that that’s a lot of fun. The interaction is great. And you know, it doesn’t really matter prediction. I mean now I mean come on. It’s like, whatever. But but why don’t you talk a little bit? Because you you did some. You had to own that. Yeah. If. If somebody’s going to call me out like that. And frankly, I had it coming. You know, I was I was. I was I was at work. I open it up. And it’s like, I don’t know. How many times that? I’m seeing the brewers and third I fired one off. No big deal. You know, who cares? It’s twitter. Well, when you get called a. You got to you got a couple of options. Right. You either be a person that sucks person that sucks it up? If I get called out like that granted were, you know, we’re not professionals per se, but we do do this for fun, and we do want to build a fan base. And I got owned on Twitter. So I had to do my own prediction. So if you go to the ninety miles dot com website, there is a new blog with my entire miles ninety miles podcast dot com. Yes. Ninety miles podcasts dot com. I have a new blog. That’s another air for you. Okay. E five. Threw me off the tracks. Where was anyway. Okay. I did a blog the long story short. It’s a fun read in my opinion. You go read it when I ended up having to do was an entire MLB prediction, which obviously we’re no experts in anything in particular. We like to think we know what’s going on in the NL. Essential. And that’s about it. So you’re good at watching some games and sitting on the couch and sipping a badge. And that’s that’s about it on that. Yeah. You know? That’s professionals. Emina get. Yeah. Yes. Right. So anyhow long story short. I’ve got an entire set of predictions. I tried to make it fun. Go check out the blog. Oh, see what you think? Yeah. I have no idea. I took some chance took some chance. Speaking of that, you know, they even some of the the some of the reporters that comment in this chain, you know, mentioned they often referred a pagoda and fan graphs, and you know, they’re playing it fairly safe.
00:30:05 – 00:35:05
I think that they’re them sticking with some of those algorithms is is, you know, not enough risk-taking to necessarily be accurate. Right. And it’s not as. I don’t think you know there. It’s it can be it’s Thursday agreements, but really those coda and fan graphs things never give anybody more than maybe ninety two ninety three wins. Nobody loses less than you know. Nobody goes below seventy wins. That’s based it’s super pretty safe. Yeah. Yeah. It’s predictions wrapped into one. And then they give you the average. And here you go. And that’s just I I took a I took a bunch of chances. I’m on a couple of limbs here. And there of obviously, I put the brewers, and I if you haven’t figured that out yet. But yeah, I think it’s you know, you use like a poker analogy, sometimes you don’t have necessarily a great hand started off. But sometimes you just gotta play. And and I think with predictions this early. You gotta you gotta play some craziness. I know you’re playing craziness on the reds. You’re you’re anticipating them imploding and then selling off. I think. Deadline if I’m right on. Of course, they’re gonna right. That’s that. But there’s no way to you know, to know that that necessarily what happened, but you know, you need to look at some kind of crazy potential because those things that seem crazy now always happen that they’re not crazy. They’re the norm in baseball. I think especially as log of a season as it is. And with the potential of injuries and everything else writes, there’s no way playing it safe is gonna get you anywhere. Close to the end results are going to be I had fun with what I wanted to do is give my predictions a storyline rate season story line, and I feel like yeah. Kind of a complex that what they are doing their professionals. They’re just trying to be as guests to accurate as possible. I didn’t worry about that. And that’s and that’s fine. I mean, you know, they know more than we do doubt about it. But. They have a better idea. The whole league is gonna like compared to what I do. No doubt about it. Right. But but by taking a chance you have a better opportunity to actually be more accurate is is kind of what I’m saying. So that I think that’s you know, and that’s the kind of fun fans can have. And that’s what I’ve got. No what we really I have no skin in the game. I’m not gonna lose if I’m wrong. This is just the I’ll point it. Oh repeatedly if you’re wrong, I’ll pick it apart, which will be fun. But I forgot about you know. Yeah, they aren’t care if I’m right or wrong. I’ll. I will be fun. So it’s something to what season it doesn’t count and our prognostications toward anything. It was more or less just something that came up, and you know, if if I get called out by some professional writers because I was being snotty on Twitter. Okay. I deserve that. And I you know, I put my money where my mouth is so to speak. So that’s what happened on Twitter this week. That was the the episode. So thanks. Thanks a lot. So yeah, we’ll we’ll get that out. You know, re tweet that on ninety mile podcast Twitter, and and pointed that out so you all can check it out and join in and yeah pylon Jesse give Jesse some crap. Yeah. So let’s move into the next pile of stuff that. So injury injury based here. We’re looking at the brewers, right? The vaunted bullpen has taken some hits since last week last week. We were talking I was specifically talking about how excited I was about the Craig kimbrel. Rumor mill we talked and said specifically in the last episode boil by this time next week will know where he landed. We’ll guess what he hasn’t landed. We have no idea where creek is Craig kimbrel. Even a human being is a real person. Or is this just somebody made up out in the interwebs? I don’t know what’s going on. He hasn’t landed yet in the brewers bullpen two days after I draft them in a fantasy football or fantasy football. Jeez. Fantasy baseball draft with some of the guys from the my fantasize fantasy baseball podcast. I drafted Corey naval ahead of you Darvish by the way and two days later karma. And it’s been a really karmic week for me couple of later days later, his UCLA is acting up in his elbow. So it’s terrible. I you know, that that is we don’t I’d I’d rather not see any injuries. No. If as brewers, you know, I’d rather teams win straight up. But that was I mean, obviously, you you should have drafted Darvish why? So he could get hurt for you.
00:35:05 – 00:40:07
You should you should be your curse. I guess if you’re the. I should have drafted more cubs curse. And you drafted a lot of brewers from what I understand I got a little brew happy more than I normally would in a fantasy baseball draft. That’s for sure. But I thought the value was there on most of them. You know, it is what it is the guys from the my fantasy baseball podcast a blast to draft with hang out with. We had a great time that night. But. Yeah, Canabal so Canadian goes, we don’t even know what’s going to happen. They bring in a bunch of specialist checkout as elbow. They can’t really from the news that I’ve gotten so far they can’t really tell what’s going on with UCLA on his elbow. We don’t know if it’s going to be Tommy John or if it’s going to be rest, he’s been dealing with a damaged UCLA. He’s been pitching with that injury for four years. So that is something nobody knew way impressive. And it’s interesting. How baseball teams can keep news like that on the down low. But at this point, we don’t know what we’re gonna get out of control as far as Jeremy Jeffress. He’s rehabbing. He’s supposed to make some minor league appearances. Hopefully. Back up with the big league club and three or four weeks. So that’s kind of where the brewers are in the back end of the bullpen that also means there are some openings in that bullpen, right? So they were filled. Here’s your relief staff. Chase Anderson is end the relief staff because he couldn’t keep it together to stay in the starting staff. Of course, you’ve got hater Albers, Alex Claudio. Jacob Barnes, Taylor Williams. Those guys are still excellent excellent options. The Bruce bullpen was super deep is it as elite as it was with with those guys. Of course, not. I’d still say it’s a very strong bullpen. And then you’ve got junior gara-, and they signed a gentleman Alex Wilson he’ll be in the pen. Josh fields was another Saini. He’s gonna start the year in the minors. They’ve got a lot of depth one thing about David Stearns as he makes sure that when you’re gonna use the relief staff like you, do you’ve got enough arms to make sure it’s going to be you know, usable. It’s just unfortunate that to start the year you’re looking at Jefferson Canabal on the injury list. But that’s kind of where that ended up. We will see if Craig kimbrel lands in Milwaukee. If he hasn’t landed yet, I have a feeling that either he wants way too, much and way too long for it. Or when the brewers actually had his elbow looked at. They saw something they didn’t like so he was in Arizona did have his elbow looked at by the brewers as well. I didn’t know if you’re aware that Ryan or not. But no, no idea. I didn’t know that. Yeah. That’s the reports. Anyway. So there’s your goal and brewers bullpen update. God at okay. Well, yeah. I mean, you know bullpen for the cubs had has had a little bit of injury issues. Patriots Strope looks like he’ll be ready for opening day. He had a strained right hamstring during spring training. But fortunately, it turned out to not be that serious. Good Darvish that blister on his finger that ended up not being serious at all. He’s totally fine. But Brandon Morrow, you know, he’s he’s. Going to be on the injured list to start the season. So you know, he won’t be available for a while yet. But we talked about that before Kara Edwards junior. CFC shak. Brad, Brock Brandon Kinzler. They’ll all be there available. Tyler chat would is hard to say how he’s going to be used and then Mike Montgomery. Of course, the the lefty who you know, started quite a few games last season. He’ll be option probably as long relief for you know, a lot of times he comes in and extra inning games to you know. And and we’ll see, you know, obviously, if the rotation ends up needing help at some point he would be a good option there. But but yeah, I. I think let’s see. Well, then there is. Toni Bernette who’s picked up? From texas. He’s he’s starting out on the injured list as well. And then been avoiding for a long time. But Addison Russell will be on the restricted list to start the season. So there’s that. Yeah. Yeah. That’s a very unfortunate situation. And yeah. Most plans they’re saying yes cubs fans. Are are are most are not happy that he’s even on the team. I’ve just try not to think about it too much. I mean, I’m I don’t know that he’ll stick around. I don’t know that he can you know, it’s it was just you know, what what he did was was horrible.
00:40:07 – 00:45:01
And this is spent as is appropriate. But it’s you know, what I’ve been seeing in on Twitter and other podcast is to see he’s sort of unmentionable member of the cubs are for now. And I think most people are just hoping he’ll just go away. And I guess we’ll see what happens right? It’s a shame because he’s got he’s a talented ballplayer. But things like this. If killed more than. A few football careers, and they should. Oh, yeah. They should. Yeah. So, yeah, it’s, you know, the this is it’s a family sport. You know, it’s America’s pastime and stuff. And as just, you know, the these players, you know, whether liked it or not whether they’re prepared to be or not are are often looked up to enroll model so just can ignore when when that kind of stuff happens off the field. So that’s that’s all I’m gonna get into it at this point. That’s that’s plenty. I think we wanna keep the opening day episode. Nice and fun. But yeah, we had avoided it for six and a half episodes. Yeah. So there it is. But I, you know, just one last thing I wanted to mention actually probably should’ve mentioned other segment, but I just wanted to mention about Nico Horner drafted there were his he was their first pick last year two thousand eighteen he had an incredible spring training. He he’s. He’s very young. He’s got some work to do yet on the lower levels. But he’s going to be that’s a name to watch out for he in seventeen at bats this spring. Unbelievable. Four seventy one batting average one point six. Oh, nine P S just just small salable. But that’s yeah. That’s sure small sample. But really, I mean incredible. He’s only twenty one years old. Just I got a mentioned nego Horner because fern lotta. Let of cubs fans are excited about that. I think as we go through the year, we’ll touch on some of the minor league players a little bit more. I haven’t even talked about guys like Casten era or Luca Sager. Some of the other night names coming up we’ve been so focused on the the big league clubs because quite frankly, these are two of the best in the National League. We wanna talk a lot about them. There is some interesting for both clubs. So it’s something that we will think when we’ll mention the, you know, once the minor league season gets going to you know, as things happen down there. We’ll we’ll certainly mention and keep an eye on who’s who’s hot down there. Because you know, I think with both Madden and council the way they manage and the way just the way the how long the season is. And how pans out you there’s gonna be some motion back and forth a little bit there. And you know, we want to be us. We don’t want to just be surprised by name. We don’t know when they come up. Instead be like, okay. Yep. That makes sense. We wanna keep. Yeah. We want to keep her listener. Informed on that stuff. You’ll see names like Zac Brown starting at some point in the regular season for the brewers for sure. Yeah. We’ll we’ll always be touching a little bit surface stuff on what’s going on in the miners who might be the options if somebody should go down another thing. I just wanted to touch onto creek counsel. Basically said he’s not going to set a specific closer in light of Jefferson Canadian being out. Obviously, you’re Josh hater usage is going to push back in ending or two which could be good news for the cubs since he normally dominates him in the sixth seventh. And then when you get gems Canabal, oh just saying, but he’ll be doing though except Rizzo. What the one home run? Okay. Well, Hugh, haters, human omega. But anyway, it’s going to be closer by committee. And that’s kind of where we’re at on that stuff, and I’m fine with that. I think there’s a lot of great arms Taylor Williams never gets enough credit. He’s going to be interesting to watch Jacob. Burns can bring the heat junior garra is a closer would be interesting. Lot of ground balls. I don’t know. We’ll see what happens. It’s going to be. It’s going to be such a fun start to the season. I can’t wait. Yeah. Yeah. I guess one. I while we’re about getting predictions here. Right. Yeah. I was gonna say that pretty much brings us into predictions. So I well, I just wanted to mention one thing really quick. I just got a mentioned David Bodey. And I’m seeing he’s on a on the projected lineup for opening day against Texas. So I think that’s pretty exciting. He’s he’s another one that will probably see a lot more of this this season as well. I he’s in there. You know, certainly there’s a designated hitter. So that’s probably a plays a role heart and got in their buzzer. Yes. Starting in Texas. I forgot about that. Yeah. But yeah, you know, three games in Texas.
00:45:02 – 00:50:12
Yes. Yes. Sorry. I’m that’s so mean, but anyway. Yeah. Anyways. Just mentioning that. And and so probably going to see how moral lead leading off most of the time and then by Bryant Rizzo Byas, which which you know, we talked about two three four that’s looking to be the projected to three four for opening day and probably much much of the season. Depending on you know, I think well Amora and zobrist my zobrist might see some time leading off if it’s you know, right handed starter with Elmore off, it’s a left-hander things like that. Anyway, just mentioned David Bodey is another piece in there. You know, he had that epic game winning grand slam walk off grand slam last year. So that was awesome. But yeah, let’s get to some predictions. Yeah. Let’s do it. So we’re looking at series one again, we’re kind of focused on. Focusing in on our cubs Bruce series, obviously, that’s the theme of the podcast. So you’ve got one to open with today or do you want me to do mine for? Yeah. I do I got a fun one. It’s time to get a little hot and sweaty. Well, you know, seeing as though it’s looking like two three four is most likely gets Burs unless there’s any kind of changes in there. I’m gonna go ahead. And and this is of course, assuming that this will occur, but Darvish most likely will be the cubs starting pitcher on Friday. And if that is the case, or if if Darvish, you know, for some reason starts the Saturday or Sunday either way Darvish versus the brewers in that opening series. I’m gonna go ahead and predict ten or more strikeouts. Okay. That’s a that’s a pretty bold prediction, especially early in a year because he’s probably not expected to go more than five maybe six innings this early in the season guys are still stretching out that would be averaging that’d be averaging a couple strike outs and inning one and three quarter. Plus if you go not that’s not far off the from his career while his Cape or nine you said was somewhere in the eleven’s. He’s not going to go nine. So that’s a that’s a strong prediction. It’s not gonna happen. So I’ll take the point. But. That’s a bold one. The birds do have a bit of a tendency to strike out. But yeah, I also saw last night in their wrap game before opening series in Montreal. They are playing Toronto. Montreal two-game set. I was watching Mike Mushtaq who did have a tendency to strike out occasionally, he beat the shift. He bunted. He bumped it up third base line for a single we’ve talked about that. So that was pretty exciting to see if he’s doing things like that going the other way he’s going to be less prone to strike. I think I think that’s a pretty tough prediction a lot of these guys have been working on good contact. And I think I don’t think you’re gonna get good. Good luck. Yeah. Yeah. Good. Tacked on the way. You’re still hot and sweaty for you. We get it. Right. That goes back a couple episodes. I like that one. Good one. It is. Absolutely good ten. Ks is bold. He’s got some nice nice movement. And he’s he’s going to be ready to go and he’s been peeing on his hands. That’s all good. Yeah. He also he’s also been giving up home runs, the minor leaguers. So we’ll see what happens. Wow. That’s you know, just tweaking of thing. Oh, yeah. Sure. Spring training minor league game. He was just working on something. Okay. Well, I last week. I did talk about my Christian yelich prediction. He’s been super hot this spring this week. I figure I should probably have some sort of pitching prediction right last week. You said the cubs would keep the bruised of fifteen runs or less. No. You’ve got your you. Darvish prediction. I’m gonna dip into the bullpen a little bit. I think there’s a lot less faith in this Bruce bullpen than there should be. There’s a lot more depth to it than the fans realize Canabal wasn’t healthy and pitching with the regular club. A lot of the season for a chunk of last year Jefferson, Mr. little time. I mean, it’s not like these guys have been there all along this depth in that bullpen. I think this Bruce bullpen holds the cubs. I think the Bruce bullpen over the course of the series will have a two point zero ERA or less. So let’s say you have three starters. Go five innings. That means there’s twelve innings of cleanup from the bullpen. I think they’re going to do a very very nice job. Maybe only giving up a couple of runs total. So is then a filling enough producing. So what was the era you’re saying two point zero or less for the Bruce bullpen in the cubs? Bruce series, the three game set, basically a three run home run.
00:50:13 – 00:55:01
If they only pitched nine innings kills me. Right. Yeah. Is that not us? I don’t know. I don’t know if it’s bold enough. What? All right. It’s kind of it’s kind of bold, it’s kind kinda bold. But you’re talking you keep telling you keep telling me how tough this cubs lineup is in other gonna. Everybody over. Oh, accept it. All right. I’ll accept it late in my Christian yelich prediction last week that one was pretty out there five hundred average for the series plus two home runs. I think keeping it two point. Oh, okay side. Okay. Okay. So that kind of matches the boldness of my fifteen or more runs. Although if they do score fifteen or more runs, you’re probably gonna lose on that one. Yeah. It’d be adult clammy and more than likely if that happens. Yeah. Let’s just leave a starter in there for for longer than they should rates. Now. Of course that doesn’t include inherited runs, right? Bullpen ERA. Right. Right. Exactly. Well, and that’s kinda why I’m like, well, that’s that’s not I wouldn’t give that an extremely I wouldn’t say that’s an extremely bold. It’s it’s kind of bold. But it’s you know, how many relievers do, you know, go through a season with a sub to ERA and I’m expecting a whole staff for three game set. I I. Yeah. Yeah. You just you’re just scared because the Bruce bullpen dominates the cubs. Right. You’re just scared. I accept it. It’s fine. I’m not worried about it. Yeah. You so not worried at all. Okay. I’m not okay. It’s still going to get a sweep either way so wrong. That’s all that in the end. That’s the most important wrong thing. So. All right. Well, okay. Well, there’s a prediction. I think those are pretty good ones. We’re really wrapping ramping up. So we’re gonna have three or four predictions each for this cubs. Bruce series. Make sure you’re tuned in we do plan on more than likely. It’s not one hundred ten percent guaranteed yet. More than likely. Short rap episode the Sunday night after the cubs brewers rep their series, probably to drop on Monday, c-can think about how awesome. It was. When the Bruce swept the cubs. If you’re a brewer fan getting on there listening to us review and listening to how miserable Ryan is right. That’s not. That’s not going to be the case. No, okay. Well, just go get subscribed and get on the Email list that we get the MP three for free. And also, you know, we want you to subscribe, listen, also if you happen to listen on I tunes, we’d love it. If you could drop us a review, we’ve got one out there. I think it’s you know, that’s it. The reviews notice by more baseball fans. And that’s over trying to do is have some fun spread the love on the baseball side. So I guess that kind of wraps up the prediction segment for today. Yes. Seventh inning stretch. So let’s talk about some opening day history. Yeah. I understand you. You went to a an opening game opening day game here. I went to. Yeah. I went to totally cool. Game one for the cubs. I went to two thousand sixteen. They fantastic year. Of course. I saw the number the first win of the hundred and three winds of the cubs that that year the World Series champion cubs. I was at angels. Angels and cubs game in Anaheim at angel stadium of Anaheim. It was beautiful night. There packed house. Great stadium. Had a great time. Watch the cubs beat the angels nine zero. It was very exciting game one with a lot of great expectations for the season. Which of course, ended up being true, which is even better. But I you know as recalling that game. I pulled up the box score. And I was singing it was fun being at a game one too. I mean, there is a lot of an fair. Of course, what a cool story to tell the kid, right? When he grows up I was at game one of the year, they won the twenty sixty series. I mean as a brewers fan I’d love to be able to do some. Something similar to that. That’s a really cool element to an opening day experience. I mean is that your only opening day so far, right? It is. Yeah. Well, then why don’t you cubs fans? Get on his case he needs to go to more. Obviously if you’re gonna win the World Series when you go to game one on dude. Yes. Yeah. I gotta yeah. I your horse. I guess I better better get to Texas here quick.
00:55:03 – 01:00:03
But yeah, it was interesting because there’s a lot of familiar faces, you know, Hayward, of course, Obras Rizzo. Bryant Schwarzer all were there. But also some that are no longer with the cubs. So that was interesting. You know, Jorges AllAire was still there. He was the D H that game Miguel Montero the catcher was played that game. In fact, he hit a hit a two run Homer. You know? And then Dexter Fowler was on the cubs that season. Of course is the leadoff hitter. He will he went three for four with three runs scored, you know. And then also Jake Arrieta pitched. And of course, that was obviously rate in the middle of of you know, kind of one of the greatest stretches of a star. Putting pitcher in the history of the game there, and and he had put on a great performance. He pitched seven innings only gave up two hits. No runs. Six strikeouts. Yeah. He did have a nice stretch there. That’s true. Oh, yeah. I was unbelievable. Justin Grimm in Travis. Would you know both had a pitch pitched in inning in there to to wrap out that game? Of course, they’re no longer on the cubs either this point, but well, there’s a lot of that’s that’s awesome. So is pretty great atmosphere. Pretty electric in the stands that day or. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. And there’s a lot of cubs fans. Cubs travel. Well, obviously, and when they come out this way. Yeah. The WGN’s travel. Well, the they they love going to Wrigley north as you. So really travel while there, but. They just wanna go somewhere where it’s a nice stadium. They can sit and relax the no there’s gonna be a game show. You know? It’s not, you know, never mind. We’re not going down that road. I’m just kidding Wrigley these fine. It’s you know, it’s fine. But yeah Miller. Miller park’s great places. She a game agree place. The tailgate going is it is. Yeah. Yeah. I’ll give all oh. Go ahead. We it’s a great place to watch the cubs beat the Berlin, whatever, it’s fun. We’ve we’ve both been to several games there. So anyway, one thing that ties in the seventh inning stretch. Here you talked about how in twenty sixteen that was Anaheim angels game or Los Angeles angels game at that point in time. The funny thing is right. The milwaukee. The very first game in brewers history. Nineteen seventy April seventh nineteen seventy came against the same angels. Now, that’s kind of interesting tie, the Burs got absolutely Spang. They were essentially a second year team moving from Seattle. They were the Seattle pilots and six nine the Milwaukee. Brewers in nineteen seventy after Bud Selig brought them over, but they got absolutely spanked twelve nothing. But that was the very first game in Milwaukee. And I believe four or five years played at county stadium. They’d had been I think the Braves moved in. Oh, shoot I’ll have to go back. And look I thought it was sixty five they left for Atlanta. So Milwaukee had been without a team for five years. The very first game in Milwaukee Brewers history came against the California Angels. They ended up having some interesting history throughout the playoffs with the angels think the eighty two series when the brewers went and met the cardinals and the World Series. I think the the California Angels were the the divisional. Series. So I’m sorry the American League championship series. So this kind of interesting tie in history with the angels. And that’s just I just wanted to touch on that, that’s really all. I wanted to hit on just kind of wages again. I I guess the only thing I want to mention about that game was in case anyone was wondering Mike trout went over four with two strikeouts. So that was pretty sweet too. Down the greatest player of all time. Unbelievable. Yeah. Yeah. So or the great area to handle them. Well, that’s that’s not easy to do. So let’s definitely worth mentioning. There’s also some other interesting opening day history. Just kind of factoid Ted Williams four forty nine hitter in his opening day games. He played nineteen years with a break up in the middle for World War Two. So that’s kind of this probably eighteen nineteen games. He played. So that’s a pretty high average for you know, it’s not a huge a huge amona hits or a huge games. But just kind of a neat factoid. And we’ll probably oh, yeah. Touch on some other things there was an opening day. No hitter thrown by Cleveland’s Bob feller, so far as I know that is the only opening day no hitter in major league history unless something has happened in the last few years that I didn’t didn’t find.
01:00:03 – 01:03:03
But. Yeah. Just couple of kind of random factoid about opening day. It’s such an exciting time of year. I know in Milwaukee, it is a wild party. It gets. Pretty crazy in the parking lots from everything I’ve heard not where I’m going to be bringing at for a number of years. But yeah, that is something something I really fan need to get down and experience. I would I really wish I had been able to plan it for this year. But I wasn’t maybe next year. Yeah. Well. Yeah. That’s that’s pretty. Pretty much that that kind of wraps up the opening day stuff. I think you know, as far as we usually do an NL central breakdown. I think the time to talk is over. I don’t know that we need to cover anything with the reds with cardinals. If you’ve been listening podcasts. We’ve we’re tired of talking about the other teams. I know once we got some games getting logged in, and we kind of see how things are shaping in the Senate central. We’ll we’ll be talking more about them for sure. And certainly when the cubs or brewers are playing any other of the central teams will will. That’s we we’ll have plenty of talk about there. But I think we can we can let them be for. Now, we we really dove in last episode on on all of them. We did. And I hit on in my blog. If you go check the blog out, you know, have some fun with it. But I definitely do touch on the reds. I don’t really touch on anybody else. But the name of the blog is the twenty nineteen tweet of anger and dismay baseball predictions. He can find it at ninety miles hot gas dot com. Pretty good. So we will see you in the season next week. We’ll recap the opening of the season, and we are going to bear down. We’re going to really really hype up the cubs brewers. This is going to be fun theories next episode. So so it’s finally here. Yup. Playboy. Yes. Finally here. All right. Well, I guess we’ll catch you later. All right. Suck suck cardinal suck. The reds reds are going to suck. They just don’t know it yet. All right. Bye. Bye.
