Woah to. Welcome to the new best rivalry in baseball. Hey, welcome back to another episode of ninety miles podcast. That’s great day in cubs land here as they continue to sit on top of the division. It’s nice. Nice view from up here. House view from down there actually, it’s pretty dang good considering everything, you know, losing games that you really shouldn’t. But you’re still within that, you know, couple of games of, you know, the supposed- twenty sixteen as Chicago. Yes. Yeah. Reya say are, are. Yeah. Well, keep playing those sub five hundred teams. We’ll see where it gets you. We’ll dig into that. Do you know we’ll talk a little bit about some of that the schedule and so on since he liked to keep bringing that one up? In any case. Yes. I mean, we were just saying about well, you know, maybe whoever’s team is ahead of the other team should open the episode. And I said, I don’t I don’t know if you want me opening every single episode this the season but I mean, it’s fine if you want, but I thought maybe we should trade off a little bit, and, and, you know, well, you know. Rest assured, you wouldn’t be opening every episode. In fact, if it’s anything like last season’s first half. It’d be me opening the whole time. The second have gotten to open quite a bit. But at the end, I would have been opening all winter long, which would. Yeah. If you think about it really, you know, ’cause the brewers vision it’s a new year new season. So right now less excuses for the cubs this year, who’s hurt nobody have fun. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, what’s your excuse sketch? Excuse to make an excuse you lock luck luck actor. Okay. Bad, bad log, no, tough schedule. That’s about it and it’s not you’re going to get that schedule. And I’m gonna love listening to you about at the whole. Okay. All right. I meant wine of sorry. Well, we can beat that out. Yeah. We might we might because. We started the crap talk before even got into the episode today. You put me in a bad mood. This is all your fault. I know. I know. You’re yeah. There might be more beeps before this episodes over. I’ll beep you. That, that can be taken a lot of ways, never mind. So anyway, yeah, we’re to cover some stuff this week. We got tweet of the week. We had some previews to do predictions do anal- central breakdown, like always we did do an episode wrap covering the cubs brewers series over the weekend. I sound pretty crabby in it, but really review the brewers pretty much dominated that series. They were just not to get two out of three. The cubs are very fortunate to get two out of three in that series. They didn’t even as ING twenty four twenty four innings to take a lead amazing that you’d say a team that won one out of three games dominated. But you know, we’ll never you started by saying the cubs dominated when they opened on Friday night with a goose egg against the brewers getting well. Three two three two out of three but you couldn’t outscore the first game. Okay. Yep. Anyway, if you want more that we already did that this week on Monday. Yes. Check that. It’s recap all. It’s an all capitals recap. Think it’s episode nap tone. Yeah. Nineteen. Yes. So take a listen. It’s, it’s good fun. It’s a good one. Yeah. It’s great. And you know, we we dive into more details about that specific series. But, you know, I guess another news is kinda move on from that. And you wanna talk about. You got some exciting news here. I’m gonna try to hold my yawns while you while. Yeah. Yeah. So one of the biggest prospects since probably the prince fielder era, perhaps got called up we’ve talked about him in previous episodes. I think last week, we even covered how we need to be patient with our our players, like Travis Shaw, but he has been borderline dreadful the whole year, which of course you’d like to remind me right? So. Yeah. Yeah. Boring. You know, Shaw’s he knows. I l so did he. In his fourth at bat on Monday night. So the brewers of course, you know, play night game in Chicago fly into Philadelphia.
00:05:03 – 00:10:04
Get their two AM. Wake play another game that night cubs. Get the day off because, you know, we don’t want over work in the right? Definitely gonna keep it light for the Cubbies. We don’t want anybody not available later in the anyway. Shaw, felt a twinge in his wrist, apparently, and according to what he said, it’s a pain that he felt a sharp pain that he had felt once last year as well felt that it was enough that he needed to report it. So he did and Bing, bang, boom, the Bruce, call up Casten here Shaw goes to the ten day injured list he’s going to sit down. We had talked a couple of weeks actually last week that I would have not seen this coming expected it in June. If Shaw continued to struggle expected in June, apparently the pain, accelerated, the timeline, lo and behold, Justin hero. My new hero is now starting second baseman for the Milwaukee Brewers, and so far, so good. So that was pretty exciting. Did you have anything to add about exciting prospects that you recall coming up for the Cubbies anytime in the last eight years? I’m putting you on the spot. Here, you got nothing. I’m trying to I’m trying to keep you interested. You don’t just start watching videos of Hendricks and Kerry would teen years ago or something. Well, why, why wouldn’t I you know? But yeah, I mean prospects of up, I mean, it’s it can be, you know, it’s hard to say I mean, it’s always kind of a, you never know you know, there can be as much hype as, as there is an and you just never you never know how my pan out. I mean, got Nico Horner whose probably their top prospect. So, whether you know, he he had a really good spring training. He was up with the club for that. But. You know, the cubs are pretty pretty well positioned, but you never know. And if something were to happen, I, I would be excited to see Nico Horner come up, although usually it would not be most cases, not for a good reason. No, this is this is an example, where it is not a good reason. If that risked bugging show season that explains. Yeah. If that has he’s. Then you have to be concerned about him. It reminds me a lot my side of what they did with Corey Canabal last year. He had a little bit of arm issue. Any was struggling, they sent some basically they sent them home for a couple of weeks when he came back. He was a totally different guy. He was back to the core of, you know, twenty seventeen but with I don’t know if that’s gonna come back or not. Shaw’s always been in that kind of two fifty ish kind of range. I’m not looking at us specific numbers Kistin hero. And here’s the issue with Shaw, if Justin hero does even three quarters of what he was doing at triple A. There might not be much room in this infield for Travis Shaw unless he catches fire. Now, the thing about it injuries are going to happen, the season’s going to have its fluctuations, Kistin hero. Just for informational purposes was hitting three thirty three and thirty seven games had eleven home runs at AAA San Antonio. This isn’t AAA Colorado Springs. Cubs fans went back. When Milwaukee had a Colorado AAA team as recently as last year. He’s doing this down in different leak. I saw him play last night. He came up some fun stuff happened in the background to this out. And you can follow me at Bruecker winning advocate winning on Twitter. He in the background of his first at bat you can hear Philly fans because Philly fans are going to be Philly fans. We swing the vets up here, you know, and after he takes two three pitches. The following pitch hero hits a hundred and three mile an hour line drive rate back up the chute hits the hits Jared, I cough the Phillies pitcher square in the rear end and bones. The third base. That’s how he gets his first career hit so Philly funny. It is funny. It’s really funny. It’s like Philly fans. We swing the Batstone here to whack. Yeah. Hundred and three mile an hour exit velocity squaring, the but the good news is a hate seeing people get hurt cough took it where he’s probably thickest. And he, you know, just a big, big Rouge. They’re probably for. Yeah. Yeah. But still to do that, with Philly fans Yellen it. Yeah. You know, your first career bet it was pretty. It was pretty cool. It’s all remember for a long time. He did have to base hits in the game. Average exit velocity on his base hits one hundred five point one miles per hour. So the kid can absolutely drill the ball. We’ll see how he does. But that’s kind of the big exciting news that happened since our Monday, drop episode today’s only Wednesday it’s kind of amazing that, that much happened in between there.
00:10:04 – 00:15:05
But that’s what’s going on with Justin hero. And it’s gonna be it’s gonna be exciting to see what he can do. Yeah. I hope it wasn’t boring. No. It wasn’t bad. I owned out a couple times and, you know, not not too bad not better than feel. They better than fielding percentage. Okay. Well, you know, Philly fans to, they talk a lot of that. Yeah. That helped giving me a chance and mention Nico Horner helps too, so. Well, we gotta keep you involved. We don’t want you to. So. Why don’t you take over? Tell me a little bit about what’s been going on the cubs. You know over weld or here, not that, but I know you don’t wanna hear it. But I’ll keep you involve. Don’t worry. I’m sorry. What? So, you know, since April fifteenth, the cubs have gone twenty and five so that’s pretty good nineteen and six but whatever. Oh, nineteen and sixty ad that’s so much worse. But fifteen in game whatever man. Because it’s so bad of the brewer is even if they did take two three there. But any case we’ve talked about it winning series is more important. Somebody tweeted at me the next day when I was taking what you called my crab nap. Guess? Never mind that I was busy on Monday. But, you know. Yeah, I was crabby and napping. That’s what was here. Here. I think you’re crabby and napping. That’s what I that’s what I say. But I’d never admitted if it was true now. Okay, well in any case. Yeah. So, you know, that’s there’s been a lot coming together for the cubs all all the way round. Really good things. Hendrix has been incredible. I mean I you know his last three starts nine innings pitched no runs three strikeouts. No walks. Eight innings pitched no runs seven strikeouts. No walks. And then eight innings pitched one run seven strikeouts and one walk. Sounds really boardwalk. Sounds really boring to watch. No, it’s great. It’s great to watch. He sees. He’s an artist there. You know. Eighteen and paint it. Yeah. If fishing efficient I mean that’s that’s nine innings. Eight innings eight innings one walk and one run. That’s, that’s a good stretch of three starts there. So note, you know. And yeah. And then, oh, this is on Twitter. I saw this. This is Christopher Camco. He’s he’s on Twitter. That’s at, at sea Kampe. He’s NBC sports Chicago KM gray. Yep. Yeah. KM. K. C. K M K A on Twitter lot of good. He, he has a lot of good stats in that kind of stuff. He posted. He tweeted this just yesterday. John, Lester, and Kyle Hendricks combined this month zero point two zero E R A in forty four point two innings pitched one. Earned run three walks thirty seven strikeouts. So that’s you know, the starting staff has really gained all it. All the way around the room for regression. That’s what I’m here. You sound like me talking about the brewers now. Well, yeah. This is how annoying. I don’t mind I don’t mind because, you know. We’ll see if that ever happens. But. I went to expect them to maintain that. Right. So, well, it’s a nice stretch though. It’s a heck of a nice. Yeah. They wouldn’t have to maintain that. Russian now. Yeah. Well, you know it’s it’s one thing about regression of an individual player, but an entire pitching staff. I know you’re talking about to individual players in this situation. Well, the thing is cantata in hamels of not been bad, either. You know it’s just at LeicesteR and, and Hendrix have been incredible will then who has been bad. Never mind. Yeah. Yeah. Four out of the five of been very good lately. That’s true. Yeah, yeah. Well, yeah. We’ll talk about Darvish in a minute. No, we don’t have to, but we can do anyway, Darvish and I’m okay with well, actually I am going to bring them up when we look at the week ahead because he’s going to have to starts in between now and our next episode.
00:15:05 – 00:20:02
So there’ll be plenty to talk about next up so but anyways. I guess, in other news with the cubs recently is Kris Bryant has been absolutely on fire. He’s looking looking like his MVP year really seven up. He’s got a twenty three game on base streak going right now. And during that stretch this another see Kampe Twitter post here as well. Chris Bryant during twenty three game on be on base streak three. Oh nine four fifty seven six. Seventy nine seven. Home runs. Twenty RBI’s forty eight times on base says twenty five hits twenty one walks and two hit by pitches. So really those are round solid numbers. I’m curious though, three oh nine with a twenty three game on base streak seems, you know, usually when guys are my guess it’s not a hitting str-. Eek. Right. If it was a hitting streak higher. It’s an on base streak. Four fifty seven on base percentage. So, yeah, it’s twenty five hits twenty one walks. But that’s that’s still good. I mean. Yeah. I think I forgot to bring up. Yeah. There was, I think, yellow heads something very similar carryover. Is that kind of player too? I mean you’re not going to see, you know, you’re not gonna see that kind of on base percentage from, like someone like which is fine because, you know, well. Sorry, I should let you say by us I like hearing by us better than Schwaiger in that situation. Well, the thing with Byas I mean he’s batting three twenty five base. Percentages three sixty two. So, but you’ll take the slugging, you’ll take his oh PS you’ll still you’ll take that. But it’s nice that you have some variety in the lineup and know Kris Bryant is doing that kind of thing he’s right now on the season. He’s bat in two seventy with four zero six on base percentage nine forty five OPN by as nine eighty two Opie SO the similar PS just achieved in different ways. Yep. And but that’s a nice to have that, you know, not have a lineup that’s all the same kind of hitter, put havi bios in the four-hole and not the three hole. For instance, there’s reasons that you do what you do with him. He’s going to be driving in the runs. Meaning he’s putting he’s putting the ball in play. He’s swing. He’ll strike out occasionally in the number four whole fine. But when he puts it in play. It’s usually extra bases or it’s going to drive runs things like that. And that’s why. Yeah. When you save variety and how they approach things. That’s, that’s a good way to put it one thing I did want as your slugging six twenty so. Okay. I mean when he is putting the ball in play. He’s it’s extra-base hits so. Yeah. And we’re I’ve been getting a lot of really great brewer info at brew underscore maths on Twitter. He’s the one that that told me about he basically had a tweet out there on Casten heroes. Average exit velocity will five point one really a nice game for him. The other day, yesterday, specifically I just want mentioned quick. He does have a lot of good info, and I troll and once in a while, but I it seems as though he, he’s good natured about it, and then appreciates the it anyways. He takes it better than I do. We’ll just put it that way. He definitely does take better than you do for sure. I think he takes a little to easy. He could he could spike. He spanks back pretty good. We enjoy working with him. And you know, getting some info from them, but yeah, absolutely, it was cool to see that. You know, your first two hits average exit v low of one zero five point one that’s going to lead me into my prediction. A little bit later won’t specifically, be exit veal. You kind of covered quite a bit of Cup stuff. I just wanted to wrap what happened in the last two Phillies games. Real quick. I’ll try not to put you to sleep gave you some time to talk. All right. We wanted that. All right. So speaking of lucky winds and unlucky winds which I’m sure you’re bringing up later because we’re going to be up. Yeah it because he brought that, oh, yeah. Yeah. You really you really. You really killed my mood this morning, man. Really hurt my feelings. This is a great way to start the morning. Isn’t it? Yeah. It is recorded ninety miles podcast is good. It is good. Good. Until you crap all over my morning. You know, it’s fine. Yeah. All right. Yeah. So in the first game Milwaukee ends up losing seven to four. It was one of those games where you absolutely have every opportunity to win it and should and they could not get it done. They loaded the bases three separate innings minimum. They left fifteen runners on. They went five for fourteen with runners in scoring position usually think five for fourteen writers and scoring position that should be a minimum five runs.
00:20:02 – 00:25:03
Right. They only scored foreign the game two or three of those hits with runners in scoring positions position did not plate a run. That’s really not easy to do. They did load the basis. A couple of times dacas hit a hard line drive. And I think this was this is kind of the backbreaker. I think this was in the seventh inning. You know, you got the Phillies you’ve got Bryce Harper right out in right field, moussaka slices one and Harper running to his left, who is not known necessarily for his defense. He can play a little d and he’s got a decent arm, but he’s definitely paid for his bat makes a diving. Catch on it basically that would have played it three runs. Yet yell at first base who would have easily. Scored on anything that got by him. They’re just one of those ball games where nothing breaks rights. There was a double play with nobody out grounded into with the basis loaded were, it was a hard ground or two third. And while it was kind of with the basis loaded Kane broke for home because you have to third baseman, grabs grabs the ball steps on the bag, and then they get Cain into a rundown. That’s how you get your first two with bases-loaded nobody out. They did not score. Just a really. That’s it was, it was a tough pill to swallow, especially after the cub series when you know you should’ve taken two out of three with ease dominating. It was tough pill to swallow. But that’s okay. They bounce back last night. Brandon Woodruff really had an ice game went six innings pitched gave up only one hit struck out five he did walk five, but that’s what bumped his pitch cone up definitely pitched around it. Brandon Woodruff has really been coming on the last three or four starts. There’s some really interesting stats about them. I don’t have pulled up but he’s, he’s looking good. So that kind of wraps up the Phillies series one that was exciting with Justin here. They went onto win six to one and one that they absolutely blew they blew it. That’s one that you’re supposed to win. Anyway. So that’s how series went so far, two more games with the fills. So that’ll be interesting to see, but that wraps up my review of the week, we already covered the cubs, Bruce stuff in the previous episode as four. Four. Yes. It’s it’s early this season yet. Season a baseball, you want to be you to be here for the long haul. So, so sign up. And yeah, yeah, I guess let’s we wanna talk about the tweet of the week. I yeah. We talk about the bring up about the standings stuff. Let’s, let’s talk about that after the. Oh, yeah. Yeah. That’s let’s get to the to the week because it’s ridiculous. All right. Why don’t you bring it in since it’s Cobstock? Okay. Yeah. Yeah. So this is at rich underscore Siegel. R I C H underscore. S. I. E. G E L. He tweeted this actually just this morning. Two thousand sixteen cubs record one zero three fifty nine two thousand nineteen cubs pace.
00:25:03 – 00:30:02
One, oh four fifty eight. He did correct in there that, that the two thousand sixteen cubs also had ties. So the record was actually one. Oh, three fifty eight and one the basically the they had a game that had been postponed partway through the just didn’t finish it up because it didn’t matter that correct. Yes. But it ended in a tie, which I had didn’t even which is rare. Yeah. I did not even know that could happen. So that’s that’s fascinating in itself, which is kinda cool aspect to the tweet other than that. It’s total garbage but, you know. Well, it’s, it’s, it’s quite good, you know, and actually, well you know, it’s funny they had that, that start. That’s that start was a bit so that that, you know win the opener and then to drop six was a little concerning. But obviously, that’s ancient history. At this point, you know, everything’s clicking now and they’re just one win after another. And you know, that’s you know, I was looking here, the National League central detailed standings on baseball reference. And last thirty games the cubs are twenty three and seven thirty games. They’ve lost seven. So I mean it really completely blows to to the the dust into the ether of history that first seven games of the season. Say that you wrote me so hard about still in your you still try to bring them up. He’s still trying to bring them up. It’s those are long gone. So you progress to the mean from there this hot you’re talking about now is obviously going to regress back a little bit. Do you seriously consider the cubs a candidate to win one hundred four games this year? Well, a candidate I don’t I don’t know. At a candidate. I you know, I don’t think you know you like to bring up the weakness of the schedule. But I, I don’t know that, that’s as big of a thing as you’re trying to say and I’m looking at some of these more schedules fans. Oh average stats to bring up you like to bring up simple rating system SRS s even on that even looking at that the cubs are in, you know. Yeah, yeah. And what that? Yeah. It will. It takes in. It takes in your run to for rental, and it takes into account, your strength schedule. Yeah. The brewers are sitting at fourth or sitting at two right behind the dollars. And I think that’s a pretty reasonable statistic. No, it is. It is interesting. And that’s fine. You know, in the other thing here, they have the pet the gory and win loss, which is expected win loss record based on the number of runs. Scored and allowed by the team. So run differential yearly raider. Raider doesn’t account for anything else, which is why it’s kind of flow. But it’s an expected win loss record. So what’s interesting about that. They have another Staten in. It’s a it’s called the gory unlock the difference between the actual win loss and the Pathak Orian win-loss essentially, they’re saying a team that is not scoring a lot more runs than their opponent. You know, basically the difference in that they’re almost like wins that are kinda lucky wins. It’s kinda like you know, and they literally call it luck, which is, I think Larry because you ate that word, but I’m looking at that the cubs are zero on that. They’re, they’re rate in line. But the brewers I see have to positive to on that, which is ridiculous. If you think about last night’s game or Monday night’s game like there was fifteen runners left on base. One. Base close that thing open. That’s what I don’t like about. Run differential. This Milwaukee has had opportunities wasn’t to live into one hit didn’t come. They will success didn’t come this team. Milwaukee’s lineup is bad ass. It is really deep. They are going to ten. When account they’re gonna, they’re gonna put they’re gonna put a fifteen burger on somebody and win fifteen to one and all this run differential baloney that you’ve been talking about is going to go away, this Pythagorean, blah, blah, blah is gonna disappear. That’s why takes counts. Yeah. This look at it. You know, I’m looking at the other numbers for the brewers though. And I’m not I’m not blown away. I mean, Owen three and interleague there. Okay. Nine eleven nine eleven on the road. Well, you know that Monday night game where you didn’t get anybody across. And now you’re ten and ten which is what you’re supposed to be anyway, about a five hundred ball club on the road win seventy five percent home.
00:30:02 – 00:35:03
You’re in great shape cubs ten in eight on the road. Okay. In fact, the cubs are above five hundred and every single metric they have listed here. Oh my God. They’re like the two sixteen cubs. Yeah. Just yes, they are stop with. No, no luck either. I wanna point someone here the brewers. The brewers seventeen and fourteen against five hundred teams the cubs are fourteen and ten against five hundred or better teams that means Milwaukee has played seven more games against five hundred or better teams than the cubs. Sure. But that’s where we bring. SRS matters still is soon as we’ll walk puts a ten burger on somebody and wins ten to one that whole thing gets chopped up his gun, that run differential Specht is silly. They’re run differential. They’re only oh my God. All right back to the tweet. The brewers have. Played thirteen games against sub five hundred teams, they’re eight and five. Yes and the cubs have only played fifteen against five hundred teams in their eleven and four. So, you know, if we look at, you know, Burs seemed seem to I’ve not dominate. Bad teams. Cubs at nine and four against sub five hundred teams. ’cause the cubs are twenty five and fourteen fourteen and ten against five hundred teams. I think you’re Matt’s off fourteen and ten over five hundred less than. Four fine. It’s math, whatever. Yes. I was wrong. It’s the first time today. Yeah. Yeah. Well, in any case, I knew you would have some fun, looking at some of these detailed sets. We should do that. Usually try. Let’s try not to leap. You know. Well, well, you know, it’s just, you know, it, it we force each other into these positions, because you’ll bring up schedules week, blonde. Okay. Well, let’s take a look a little more detail. So it’s there’s no option. But to go down the rabbit hole on when when you come go all the way down. And you come out the other end the cubs are the better team. So they had the better record. We could’ve started with they’ve got five less losses. And we would have been in the same spot. We couldn’t just done that. No, no. Yeah. No, no. I think the SRS that is interesting. I think it, it is more accurate. Representation of what’s going on? Even though it has cardinals technically ahead of the brewers, which is kind of funny, but that’s a different story. Basically, running dodgers cubs cardinals brewers than it has Zona. Cincinnati’s really high which is funny. So those are all the teams before you even get to a National League east team like the Phillies which is also another interesting thing that’s going on. But the tweet of the week back to the beginning cubs pace four and fifty eight are the cubs gonna win one hundred four games. Ryan. I you know, probably not because obviously that pace doesn’t consider again the shift in schedule. They are going to face, you know, stronger teams are going to have some stretches with less days off. So, you know, hey, I’ll be low realistic on that. Not, that’s, but it might be the most realistic thing you’ve said since we started this podcast. Okay. That was that was hyper. But you never you never know if Darvish turns it around assuming injuries, you know, don’t come up. You never know. Never know do. No, no. We all know the brewers and cubs. They’re going to be somewhere between ninety and ninety five wins each. That’s how I see it. That’s all I predicted it to begin the year. Maybe I gave him a walkie ninety six Chicago ninety four I don’t recall. But yeah the the cubs pace. It’s cute. It’s a cute tweet. That’s all it is, though. Okay. All right. We’ll have to let Richard know, we use that tweet anyhow, yes. Yeah. We will. I, I was going to so. Yeah, I was going to bring something else up today. Oh, little bit of a bombshell for you. Got it forgot is it real. This really it’s a real bummer even with my crabbiness sure you wanna do this right now. It’s gonna make you even possibly not necessarily more crabby right now. Maybe later, probably just make you more depressed. But wow. No. But I you know, I gotta bring it up. You know it’s so, so here I’ll, I’ll make it quick. Actually would it’s may fifteenth today. So sixteen years ago by my dad passed away, and I, you know, it was a weird day. It was a weird situation. The cubs played that day he watched the game.
00:35:04 – 00:40:04
And, you know, he they were playing the brewers that day and it ended up being a seventeen inning game that the cubs won four to two. Well. And yeah. And he, he, you know, we had a restaurant at the time, and yet he was supposed to make the run pick up stuff for the restaurant, but he watched the whole game and did that low later than normally would, you know, and then came brought the brought everything in and you know, it was a later evening than normal. And then on his way home, actually because he had a, a seizure condition. He had a seizure, and was an car accident and and passed away. And so, yeah, you know the last game I’d had saw was a cubs brewers game seventeen innings at the cubs won four to two. So had that game maybe not run so long if the brewers would allay down somewhere in there. And you know, I’m making light of this. I know everyone’s probably like, Jesus kind of dark, but you know what, my dad would have thought this was hilarious because he had he had a good sense of humor. So, yeah, I just want you to know. You know, I. Yeah, I yeah, I don’t know what to say about that. You’re right. That’s the reaction. I wish they would have lost. I’m sorry, ma’am. I don’t know. That’s well the feel bad. So. In any case. Yeah, that’s that’s kind of amazing. That’s a that’s a tie that I didn’t know until today. So, yes, a ninety miles tie. That’s deeply personal and yeah, you know, I and so I say, I, I realize record in this episode today. So, yeah. I mean it’s it is what it is. And you know to to try to find a little humor there something. As the best way to deal with. He would appreciate that. Yeah. L he’d he’d appreciate go in there. So that’s why that’s why I just wanna make sure make sure it’s clear to everyone. Trust me yet. He had a great sense of humor, and would have found very found a very funny for me to throw that one at Jesse here. So it’s yeah, these extra inning games maybe maybe they should let game ties. I mean. And I don’t know. No open to it. I would never have been open to anyway. Yeah. Well, yeah. That was. No, I remember that though. But yeah, it was in Miller park cubs brewers cubs. One, good thing comes one. At least that’s good. But yeah, I mean that’s the only time that it’s ever good. But that day that’s, that’s fine. Brooks Kieschnick was the losing pitcher running. Yeah. He’s come up in the couple of times. Did he hit a dinner that day would be the other question? Let’s take a look not if you will if he’s pitching in the seventeenth eighteenth inning. He didn’t get a hit. Okay. Well, there’s another ninety miles. Brooks Kieschnick came up with the cubs and cut it. So the brewers took them because, you know back then take all the healthy get so well. And as you know, I mean that was that was pretty motion season for me two thousand three Cup. Yes. That’s that’s the same season area close. Yup, that’s the same season. I started watching it your apartment with you. And yes, I did do you remember that very well? I remember that time period, pretty well. I know I never did get to meet Gant, which is something that I do but we weren’t we weren’t as tight then as we are now. No, we were just just to know each other. Yeah, but, but yeah, you know, an probably, you know, I’ve been thinking I’ve probably do blog post a D tailing that season. And that, that year for me and the cubs, I mean, that was that was quite a year, but yeah, yes. But yeah, I just thought I’d bring that up. I thought I’d save it for today given given that today. Sixteen years ago. So, yeah, I don’t I didn’t, you know. That’s so now you should feel bad. It’d be for being a whole now. And then crabby this great, thanks, thanks. Thanks for the guilt of your dad’s death on my shoulders today. I pre she at that. She at that. Throw that on there too? On top of the brewers sucking. So there’s that. Yeah. All right. So preview. Let’s just previous sure halo problem. Oh, yeah. What’s what’s coming up? Well, I hit it at early. I the only thing I was going to mention is that between now and our next episode Darvish has to starts.
00:40:07 – 00:45:08
One of them is actually interesting, as you know, the cubs play the Phillies next week. And it’s looking like the likely matchup would be Darvish versus Arrietta, which is quite interesting because if you think about it, I mean, in a sense, Darvish, replacer Yeta in a way. So who would you rather have? Oh well, I guess we’ll see. Next week. Okay. Yeah. No, I, I don’t know. I you know, I miss area, I you know, he was great just all around. Obviously, he’s had an exceptional run there as a pitcher. But I just liked him as part of the team. He is, you know, personality wise and everything he just fit in there and it’s just too bad. You know, and that and I think that’s his agent which actually Boras. A he’s been losing clients. I thought I saw something. I think. Yeah. That he’s you candidate signed with the brewers, for example. So. Yeah, yeah. And I, I don’t blame them for cutting ties. No, I’m not necessarily all on ownership’s side here on everything either. But at the same time know there’s, there’s gotta be, there’s got to be a market, and if teams want to win, which many of these teams, there’s been a lot of this talk about, oh, teams are trying to lose blah, blah, blah. I don’t really believe that I think they’re trying to adjust to how you need to win in the future which means. With youth with a budget, you know, executing within said budget, and it’s gonna take it’s gonna take some changes in the CBA for the players to be happy, which is understandable. But in the meantime, teams like the brewers are doing what the brewers need to do their exciting guys. The one year deals the cubs are taking a year out of free agency. So next year they might be able to do something again this in plus, you know, if you look at how the cubs are performing the performing fine. Maybe they didn’t really need all that much and all of us as fans. They didn’t all of us fans our saying they needed Bryce Harper. And you know I’m perfectly happy without Bryce Harper races worth the contract. If you’re an owner if you’re a general manager, it’s a lot more arguable. He definitely puts butts in the seats. There’s no question about that. The far. Yeah. Yeah, but that’s there are people out there saying he’s not worth the price. Well, if you start looking at Opie s and some of the other numbers, and how he drives and runs he might well, be worth it. The other side of that. Coin too is he’s just in a slump, perhaps, is this the future? This is new mean because if this is new mean that’s just going to be a lot of people aren’t going to sign dudes that kind of contract. Anyway. We totally well, engine to the continue. Well, I think, yeah, I mean, I think, you know, if if you know, I wonder if the, the sort of atmosphere of the market and with players signing extensions and everything that you got going on now if, if, if that had aligned back a few years with their yet, I think area to stays with the cubs or vary. Adages has any other agent. I don’t think he really wanted to go. I mean he he was part of, of the cubs. I mean he was a cubs pitcher. I mean, he really was, you know, a part of the team, and I think he really liked liked playing in Chicago. But, you know, I so I don’t know. I hear what you’re saying. Your question. Yeah. I miss them. Yeah. Yeah. Well, then I liked them on the cubs, obviously. Yes, but, but it is what it is. And there’s our friend. Yeah. I’m not you know, I’m not going to really I guess, say too much more about Darvish, you know, ’cause we’ll have plenty to talk about next week two starts there that the only thing I’d like to cap on that, too. Is it seems to me that a lot of the rhetoric here from the, the players is, they’re, they’re taking X number of dollars for the union for the next guy? That’s coming, even grand all said, I needed to take the highest value per year contract for the next guy’s and honor the guys before them. And that’s something to do more with the union than anything else, and that I think is part of something Scott Boris, you know what I don’t know the guy, I’m just guessing that is something he puts in the heads of his clients, and that’s why you see a lot more of them a get bigger deals, but be go through a lot more heck to get to those bigger deals. So that’s just something I kind of thought about okay, usually, I did want to touch a little bit on the. Errs the preview they got two more games of Philly three against Atlanta and then they finally get a day off to against Cincinnati followed by another day off. So this ten game road trip. That’s a real grinder is gonna slow down a little bit. In the meantime, the Burs pitching staff has been much, much better over the last several weeks, I’d just like to kind of touched on it, briefly, the pitching staff, the starting staff should scenes been better.
00:45:08 – 00:50:00
We already talked about Woodruff. He’s been excellent. Zach Davies is having a borderline career year thus far and GIO Gonzalez. I think is the glue that brought everything together settled some things down. It allowed a guy like Corbin burns to go to the bullpen which in the long run. I’m still not in favor of him being a bullpen guy. I would like to see him develop because I think he’s got for good, pitches, and can be a front end of the rotation starter. But in the meantime for this season a bullpen at the back where it looks like hater garra Jeffress and burns isn’t bad. It misses Canabal som. That is a pretty solid bullpen. When Jimmy Nelson comes up, perhaps, perhaps you have a guy like Peralta slide to the bullpen as well. Everything’s getting deeper and the staff is settled down. So that’s not much of a preview that’s more of a review. But that’s what I’m expecting is the brewers run differential, because we keep bringing up is going to start to increase, because the staff is settling in and custom here. Though. So it doesn’t matter. Record saying that run differential by the end of the year is not even gonna matter. It’s not even going to be a thing you talk about anymore. That’s my point. Okay. It’s not even going to be a thing now. All right. Let’s get into prediction was running long, there’s no no correlation run differential in win laws record at all. That is not what I said. Yeah. All right. Anyway. Okay. Anyway. So. Let’s going to predict what are we go to prediction? So today you like you said is Mace just lost the date. What is it may? I’m sorry, fifteenth, fifteenth this, right. Today’s make that means. We’ve got June fifteenth got half a month. The may we got June. We got part of July for talking all star break. Yeah. Where we sitting we got. About a month and a half before the all star break. Right. So in my prediction Casten hero had eleven home runs and thirty seven games at the triple a level. Now I’m not the type of person that expects a kid to come up from triple A and continue pace of that nature. A pitching and I don’t think anybody really is that naive. But with this many games left. I would think he should be able to accomplish something pretty cool by the all-star break. I think Casten hero will be in double digit home runs by the all star break. And that’s my prediction. Ten or more ten or more by the all star break. No, he had it took him thirty seven games to get that far in the minor leagues. I don’t know exactly how many games are set up between now and the all star break. But if you figure six two three four and that’s swimming, he stays right? Right. Seven so forty five fifty games, maybe or or not. It doesn’t require that he stays up, but you are assuming he’s staying. My prediction is what I what I saw yesterday. I don’t think this team brought him up with the intention of sending them back down. They actually doesn’t they DFL DFA Spannenberg. So he’s off the forty man roster. They had to make room on the forty man to bring them up travel show head to go to the injured list. I don’t expect him to hit poorly. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was well over two seventy five at the end of the season even at the big league level, he’s done nothing but hit at every level he’s ever been at he opened the season struggling. Make some contact. He had a high strikeout rate, a low walk rate for about ten games or so. And then he completely flipped the script, and what I saw yesterday was impressive. Now, of course pitchers are gonna figure out holes and things like that. But the way he’s hitting the ball with that kind of exit velocity. I don’t think ten home runs is unattainable by the all star break by any stretch. And I think he can do that. I think he was going, I think the plan is to keep them up. I don’t think there’s any sending back down, especially if he stays hot. Why would you send them back down? So I do it without condemning. I’d do it with contingency. He’ll, he’ll have ten by the all star break. If that’s not aggressive enough for you. I have a backup plan. But if that’s enough for you. That’s the one I’d prefer. I’d like to get some that are going to actually break, you know, halfway through the season. So we have some more results and speaking results, go back to the Monday episode the weekend rap, we cover all of our brewers. Cubs predictions for last weekend. And that went. Pretty interestingly, it’s actually pretty good episode. Listen to it, and I am crabby because I should be. But that’s okay. Yeah. Boo crabby today to better.
00:50:00 – 00:55:04
Now, I’m better know your little better, little better. Well, this is fun. It is fun. It just gets, you know. Yeah. Never mind your turn. Okay. All right. All right. So. Yeah. I. I’m trying to think I’ve been trying to think of what, what kind of a prediction, I’d like to make? I I’m kind of leaning towards wanting to make a prediction by the end of the month. And okay, so, you know, we got half a half a month here. Looks like fifteen games fifteen games. And I’m I’m gonna say in those fifteen games. I am gonna go ahead and predict that Kris Bryant. Is. Is really gonna find his power stroke here. Even more and. Let’s see. I’m going to say is gonna hit. Six or more home runs. So that’s what a home run. Every third game a little better than. Yeah. Six runs and fifteen games. How has he been this month so far? Well he’s got eight home runs on the season. Yeah. But since may further we talked about, you know, high mentioned earlier about, you know, the Lah, he’s got a twenty three game on base streak going. He’s been hitting three. Oh nine seven home runs in car in the last twenty three game. That’s pretty aggressive. I’m just trying to look at it gets bold. It’s well. Well, a hard time on Monday because that, that one turned out to be not really bold at all. But let’s well you didn’t. You didn’t push it. So I got to be very careful because it’s on me now. I’ve got to make sure that you are holding up your end of the bargain, I think picking a rookie. Oh, triple eight, or ten home runs by the all star break is bowled. But that’s yeah, no, that’s both for sure. Because he you know, he’s not going to be playing every day later on. I yeah, I mean if Shah comes back, you know, he’s probably, I would imagine, you know, be a little more plugged in here and there, but I so I I let you go with that, that’s fine. I mean obviously, this is very different to me, go this. But this is fifteen games. Games. I mean it looks like in the last fourteen games he’s got fourteen days I should say so basically back to may second. He’s got five home runs. So you’re basically expecting him to maintain his pace. Yes. Which may or may not be bold. It’s up. It’s up to you. I mean do you can you put a contingency in there for me? Six home runs and something something. You want to add something else to it. Or do you want to just up you want at seven home runs? Well, I think I think six is pretty reasonable. But it’s like a maintaining pace like basically what you’re trying to do is. Yeah. Are you that he’s going to maintain this pace the entire month, which I think is possible. I don’t think it’s outrageous at all, but okay, well, what if he ups upset, then and what if I say, seven homers, seven feels better? But it it’s okay. I was thinking you know, his on base percentage over this last fourteen days with streak. You’re talking about everything else is five twenty nine which is ridiculous. You know what? What don’t you just why don’t you just have the six home runs? That’s fine. Really? Okay. Let’s yeah. I mean that’s one thing. I mean, the power has been coming, right? But remember I have what, what was the one prediction? I’ve got I made before the season started, which actually ’cause, you know, Brian had a little bit of a slow start at made me a little nervous. But I what was the prediction. That’s a good question. I don’t keep track of yours was home runs by all-star Bray, twenty five plus home runs twenty five or more home runs by the all star break that I did that that was actually episode one episode very first prediction. I ever made for this podcast was Kris Bryant would have twenty five or more home runs by the all star break. So he you know, I’m still banking on that. But the pace needs to increase, you’re almost hedging your bet with this one hedge. That’s fine. That’s fine. I am because well if your six year lease there, get half of my Kris Bryant home run.
00:55:04 – 01:00:03
Action, right? Fine hedge away. That’s fine. I’ll ride Casten hero all the way to the all the way to the championship nobody’ll. It’s fine. All right. So six home runs by the end of the month. Six more home runs by the end of the month. Because he’s already at five that would be ridiculous. No no by. Yeah. Between now and the end of the month. He hit six or more home runs that seems fine. Okay. I would like to see paired with like twelve RBI or something, something where you have to do two things. But that’s okay. It’s okay. You do you want me to do that? I don’t wanna hear about the second to keep going. It’s getting long. It is it is. Let’s move on. We’ve got predictions from the last episode next week, you’d better bring in her go home though. Let’s do that. So there we go. Well, I think it’s a reasonable prediction. Let’s move on though. We want to get to the we wanna just do a brief NL central rep. We haven’t done this brief, you know Carr cardinals. True kernels, do suck and they’ve been sucking a lot, which is awesome. Just absolutely wonderful three and seven the last ten love what happened Saint Louis Saint Louis what is going on. Not go. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh is flipped the script on us a little bit. They’ve gone seven three last ten. Yeah. They still have a minus thirty seven run differential now three over five hundred. So that tells you what run differential means. Anyway. Well, but see, that’s where you can look at these other, you know, better numbers. And yes, it is, you know, lock luck that luck number the difference between the actual inlaws and the path Agora in win loss is a positive five. That’s they’ve won five more than winning Nickless should buy their metro ES, thereby technically by, you know, the win run differential. They’ve won five more games, which is lucky. You know, they literally use the word you know, the brewers have two that’s because the pace and. Says that it’s anyway, that’s why like SRS if SRS Milwaukee C Lewis is three and Milwaukee’s will ahead of them. So the standings if you go all the way down to Pittsburgh, there, SRS there in the bottom four of the nationally, their minus points. So, yeah. Negative point figures doing things. They shouldn’t be doing, which is something that I kind of right octa boat in early seasons. That is. Yeah. In Cincinnati’s Mirroring at the other way. They got negative six lakh meaning. According to the according to run differential, they should be winning more games than they’re not. And so as baseball to me, though, that’s why these things are just funny. Well, sure. But I mean you know, it’s still SS point five though, and, you know, they I you know, the pet the gory and win loss is twenty four and eighteen they’re they’re they should be above five hundred according to run differential. But they’re not. So it’s interesting looking at that, you know, and I guess that goes to show I was saying about that with, with Cincinnati. I mean I kinda always thought there are a little better team than this. So I don’t know. See how that, that I just wanna point turn around a little bit. I picked Cincinnati to have problems and I’m not wrong in the win loss column. I also picked Pittsburgh to finish better than them, but didn’t expect them to have a great run differential, because Pittsburgh’s whole thing is based on pitching when they’re pitching when they’re winning. They’re winning games where the, the backend of the bullpen closes out a great start. From somebody and win. They’re losing their getting bombed because they’re using middle relievers, that aren’t any good. You don’t put your middle relievers out on the mound. When you have a lead, that are, you know, you don’t put the bad guys out there. That’s why I just feel like with the way the game is played this run differential thing is a little bit skewed it tells a part of the story, like we keep talking about, but it does not tell all story. And that’s why my prediction look. We look at us are s you know, negative point six there for Pittsburgh. And I’m looking, you know teams playing against teams five hundred or better. They’re five and thirteen. So they really do not play well against Raines. Yep. Exactly. Which which lead? And that’s reflected in this. It’s a week schedule, again the cubs played twenty four games against five hundred. A better teams the pirates only eighteen that’s why I’m not concerned about the pirates. I’m not terribly concerned about Cincinnati. Cincinnati is ten and nineteen against five hundred or better teams. Let me is they’ve played a lot of ams against five hundred or better teams teams that are winning more than. Way more than pit. Yeah. And that’s part of why they’re records lower. So I expect Cincinnati to come back up a little bit. And I expect Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh to go down. And in the preview I didn’t really talk about it.
01:00:03 – 01:03:46
But the bruiser about ten games out from playing a whole bunch against Pittsburgh. They’re thirteen games. Oh from playing them seven out of ten games. It’s the Bruce schedule is so weird this year. They’re playing four against Philadelphia this week. And then they finish up the I think the season series here next week. So within you know, eleven games they finished their entire season series. They’re playing seven out of ten against Pittsburgh. They played ten out of something stupid seventeen against Saint Louis it’s been very bizarre. There’s been a lot of familiarity, but based on annals central breakdown, I think things are doing what we think they were supposed to do. I look at this. Yeah. For the most numbers every look about rights. Yeah. Yeah. You’ll argue with them. No, they. Well, it certainly looks right? With the cubs on the top there, Milwaukee and second Saint Louis and third. That’s, that’s right, for sure pitzer, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, whatever. You know, but yeah, I mean, I you look deeper in the numbers in, and they are reflective either which way so, you know, whatever it is. But at the end of the day, the cubs are infers with the same number of wins as the bird. Yes. Whatever. Yeah. Yeah. Six forty one winning percentage. That’s right. You know, we’re, we’re. Doing good overall, and we talked analyst, just briefly last year or last episode. Not not this weekend’s episode, but before that cubs are six and four Burs nine into Saint Louis seven, and four Pittsburgh. Tune one Cincinnati seven three. I just want to reiterate when I did my tweet of anger and dismay predictions. I flat out said the analyst was way overrated. Everything is panning outweigh. I, I did not understand it preseason. I know there’s a lot of hype, a lot of east coast bias and things like that. The, the National League east is okay. It’s a solid division. But it does not stand up to the central so anyway. Homer Ville for the central teams. Good job, central teams except Saint Louis you’re not supposed to do that, you suck. But yeah about it. No. I think we should wrap it up. How do you feel? Let’s wrap it up. I’m excellent. Excellent. Good episode. Good talking a lot of negativity. And got it out though. I feel better. I feel a lot better. So that’s good. Good good. I’m good. You know, I hope everything, you know, I know your mom’s visiting as well. So enjoy her company and hang out today. Oh, yeah. Yeah. We’re going to have have good. I think we’re gonna go plant some trees, we bought yesterday. And, and. Yeah. Should be good. And. Yeah. Cubs in first Burs? So suck suck. I only got a note here on the guy won one Noddy word I got a beep out. So that’s not bad. And you know. Yeah. You pro-. We don’t have the. So you must be feeling better, even though even though you know. But yeah, that’s good. Try. This can be therapeutic for you. Feel better. No. You really are making. I’m glad I can, you know, talking about how good the cubs are can make you kind of think twice about being a brewers fan and don’t get some relief that little. Little relief. I’m done Red Sox, Pittsburgh car, right? This is long. Yeah. All right. We’ll catch your next week.
