Woah to. Welcome to the new best rivalry in baseball. All right. Good afternoon. Baseball fans. Cubs fans. Brewers fans. Welcome back. It is the ninety miles podcast. This is your short episode. This is the series wrap up episode series one cubs. Versus brewers at Miller park took place this past weekend. It is Sunday afternoon. We are recording live. I guess can you record live Ryan, I guess he can I were recording right now, that’s true. And we’re alive. So we’re we’re live recording. We’re not in the same room. We are alive and recording. So we’re probably a lot more alive than either teams starting or bullpen pitching stabs are right now that was a brutal beat up. But what we’re here to do. Today is just talk a little smack kinda give you the the wrap up on the bruise and cubs series. How do you wanna start out there? Ryan do want to you know, bow down to the might the brewers. Would you like to open that way? Because it seems appropriate. Well, the brewers took two out of the three. Neither looked great really even neither club. Yeah. And you know, I just got say, it doesn’t really matter. ’cause last year, you know, all the cubs started off against the brewers. What eight one. Start using last few who who won the division? Well, the better team won the division last year. Right doesn’t right matchmaking of that? Okay. Sure. Sure, the whole podcast is focused on the ninety miles rivalry. But this series that matter I’m with you. That makes sense what I wanted to say to the cubs started out eight and one against the brewers last year. But the brewers have started out eight and two against everybody. That is nice. That’s a nice when we talked when we talked last week we re release every Wednesday. The brewers were still playing Cincinnati Reds live on TV and the cubs had yet to play two more games against the Braves the cubs. What happened coming into this series before we get to deep into the brewers and cubs? We will do wanna rep basically on that. But I just thought I’d bring that part up to how were the cubs rolling when they came into Miller park. Not not too good. A lot of bullpen issues, which has been some major adjustments there. Carl Edwards junior’s been sent down to triple A. In fact, you guys got a little bit of him. Friday. We did he. Yeah. Milwaukee actually helped lower his era believe it or not. Yeah. Got outs gave up one run. But yeah that brought his ear aid down down. Yeah. Actually, thirty two point four it ended up at after that. Yeah. Well, you know, I feel I it’s a, you know. Okay. So Carter’s junior. I mean, he’s at three different pitching coaches three different years this ozzy’s, and he was working at a on a toe tap thing. Which at the end of spring training. He was informed that it’s an e-. It was an illegal Pitt illegal way to pitch the, you know, the hesitation, I, you know, and it was like, okay. Well, you know, and it wasn’t they try to brush off his on big deal. But clearly, I think it was a big deal. I think all offseason in all spring training. He was pitching one way. And basically right when the season studies told you can’t pitch like that. It’s legal to pitch that that would be difficult. Yeah. That would be very difficult to say that junior. Yeah. Yeah. Had the biggest thing. So now, he’s got to go down to down a triple A and and figure things out. So yeah, that’s. That’s okay. Air but explains some of the bullpen stuff as I said two neither team pitched very well. This the first two games of the series were football scores. It was fourteen to eight in game. Two in favor of the cubs. Thirteen to ten in game. One in favor of the brewers. Game is bears. Yeah. Exactly. There’s a couple of Twitter Twitter feeds basically talking like it was Packers bears time. And yeah, that would have that would have felt a lot closer thirteen to ten feels close on a football game. I don’t feel like thirteen to ten game felt close on Friday night. The brewers ran out on cantata who has been a brewer killer came into the game with a one point six one area a across the board whether it be Wrigley or the or or Miller park he left and if I’m not mistaken his era at this point against Milwaukee went from a low one point six one up to two point five one.

00:05:15 – 00:10:03

That’s an increase of point nine. The guy’s got a lot of innings. He’s. Got over seventy five innings against the Bruce for a big jump like that we had talked before that it would take a lot because that was also bringing in one of your predictions, and we’ll wrap that up in a little bit. But Catanha gave up eight earned runs against Milwaukee to open. A Brandon Woodruff was his counterpart on the hill. He looked good for three innings, and then kind of blew up. He’s one of the young studs that the bruiser bringing out overall though pitching in the series was borderline atrocious for both clubs. I think there’s a couple of highlights that are okay for Milwaukee all talk about. But I want you to go ahead. And maybe you want to jump in and kind of describe what you saw not just Caroline rich. Jimmy, we’ve covered that. Maybe what else did you see from your starting staff because that was really supposed to be the strength of this of this club coming in as far as the pitching side goes. Well, I mean can Tana. I mean, he I don’t know what happened there. I, you know, his previous outing which this is first start. But he did pitch. For innings in relief of Darvish, and he was excellent looked great. So I I’m not really sure what happened. It could be that. He ran into the best batting order in the national. The Burs are phenomenal. You know, they hit the ball hard. You know? I think that’s what happened. I think he just got better. Kyle headaches today. I, you know, I’m not entirely sure they’re either. He he just something was off their no those two games have in common. I think it’s the brewers lineup that they have in common. Okay. But Cole ham. Did just fine yesterday. Did he know? Yes. Actually, he settled down sixteen runs. He no pitched fine and Gaza be one of the highlights really for the the cubs. This series would be the two earned run performance six innings. So basically three point oh for the game. That would be one of the higher highlights for the cubs. I was you know. You know, it would have been three runs over nine. Yeah. That’s no. That’s a that’s a quality start. That is a good start. Especially the way this game. These games I should say had been going now even that game. Even the game that the cubs won there. They won fourteen to eight Cole hamels pitched gave up to. And then the bullpen comes in and gave up six runs. Exactly. Yeah. No hamels was decent. I all the other runs combined later in the game for kind of washed it away in my memory hamels. Had a good start. Absolutely. I would say Zach Davies on the other side for the brewers was the surprising. Good start. The young guys had a couple of good innings and then struggled Davies went five and two third today gave up two earned runs. And really if you look at that inning. It could have been a six innings zero run game for him just kind of broke funny with the themes error that you saw today and then in the sixth inning, and then the by as swinging bunt that basically made it halfway to third base and died that were those were the first two. To get on. And then Davies struggled a little bit gave up the contraire home run. But I thought Davies obviously pitched pretty well from a walkie. And then the best pitcher arguably in my opinion in the National League. Josh hater pitched very well to close the game out outside of that. There weren’t a lot of great pitching performances. There were a couple of okay ones. I thought you know, would riven burns starters were. Okay. Burns going to get better. He’s got an elite spin rate. He just needs to learn to control it. The good news for Milwaukee. Is you know, Freddie, Peralta had a fantastic start against Cincinnati. So it’s not all lost. But they got they got this not kicked out of the series. Both pitching staffs. Well, yeah. You know? And there is there is a fair amount of errors as well. Yeah. You know? Had that one day you already mentioned. And then yesterday, Bruce add a couple airs. Yeah. They’re up to four on the season. For an airs if I’m not mistaken. We’re the cub grand all for the angular carrot teeny had catcher interference yesterday and it consecutive days against editor. Well, contrary us then had it on Friday. Oh, okay. And they had in the game prior to that. And Atlanta they had a catcher interferences three games in a row with catcher interference which I was seeing that was the first time since nineteen twenty.

00:10:04 – 00:15:01

That that a team had catcher’s interference three straight games. Any? Which is a weird is supposed to be two of the best teams in the National League. What are they doing? Yeah. It’s just that’s that’s just on a level of weird that I I’m not really, quite sure. No. And both both in the brewers games. It was against Hastings Aguilar. And I kinda see how a catcher would get caught. With. Hey sues. If you’re reaching for that pitch. He’s got a late. Quick wrists. Swing and big bat. And he’s a big, dude. So his bad is coming through zone late and fast. I can see how it would happen there. But to have it happened three games in a row. Two different catchers in the Bruce series. Yeah. That’s bizarre. That’s bizarro type of stuff. I mean is that a coaching thing? Or is that just just weird random beautiful baseball? I don’t know. Yeah. It’s on you know. The records got another one go for it. Yeah. Oh, I know just the let’s see. Oh, well, then the cubs also on. Friday. They had will Hayward had that weird fielding air. Which that’s that’s rare. That’s odd. Right. I do does Joan just need to bring back. Holy cow. Can’t talk does. Joe madden. Need to bring back the beer in the fast food. Oh, do they need to Aaron Rodgers and our ES L A X? What is going on in Chicago? Ryan. I I don’t know. I think it’s just it’s separate individual weird things. It’s kind of you know, if it weren’t for the fact that they won the World Series in two thousand sixteen there’d be a lot of talk about a goat curse going on right now. Or some kind of a curse. I mean. It’s it’s there’s not a lot of rhyme or reason the only thing that that there is definitely is is the bullpen. But the Air’s it’s just especially like Hayward, and you know, Rizzo had those couple errors in one play. You know? I mean, you’re talking about to go Glover’s there. I mean, that’s just not not absolutely absolutely. And we’re getting we’re getting twelve and a half minutes into here. We’d like to keep these a little shorter. This is our first time doing it. We hope you’re enjoying it in my opinion. It’s pretty clear the better team won two to three games. Really? I think that’s really where we’re at thirteen runs which is what Milwaukee scored in game. One is the most by the brewers. Versus the cubs and Miller park. So if you didn’t know that cubs fans, there’s another one that you can throw on the board kind of a fun one for brewers fan. It’s kind of a fun one. Anyway, Davies we should have. We should have expected Zach Davies to be a little better. He’s got a two and two record and a two point four seven area against the cubs in his last seven. So he’s been he’s been very solid against the cubs. The cantata thing that was weird. The other thing about game one. I just wanted to cover some cool historical things the Bruce had five different players Homer in that game. I believe they’ve had five home runs and previous games. But I don’t believe they’ve ever had five different players hit home runs in a single game. And the funny thing was when you look at it. Okay. Ryan Braun he had two games in a row where you went deep. He’s he’s expected, but Aron Perez. Yes, money grand. All our CEA who according to most cubs fans isn’t the bat and then air Fame’s, these aren’t even guys that the brewers are relying on to hit home runs. So one of two things happened. The brewers have a super. Deep lineup or your pitching staff is awful, which de preferred to take. Well, the the pitching in wasn’t that good on Friday. So. I’m just trying to find a way to jab at you come on, man. The brewers bats are whatever. But you know. Yeah. Yeah. Whatever. Oh. By the way. I is what they are. I think the cubs scoring fourteen runs that you know. And I get it. I would say I’m pretty sure I I saw that. That’s the most the cubs have scored in Miller park ever. I’m sure you gotta one up us by a rundown. Thanks a lot. So so there there there it is. Yeah. In my face, right? And what was cool about the game? Yesterday. Was that the number seven and number eight spots in the batting order Hayward and care teeny. They ended up five plate appearances each total a ten plate appearances in God on base every time. Para walks each and then three hits each and for Hayward two of those hits were home runs.

00:15:02 – 00:20:01

Well, that’s interesting. Because which which game was that was that game number two. Yeah. Yeah. So I’m looking at that same game number two and you’re to whole hitter combined with zero for six with five strikeouts for those strikeouts were credited to Kris Bryant, so he had a golden sombrero. Mistaken your number three hitter is one Rizzo. So you were a combined one for ten between Bryant and risen that same game. You needed every owns that. You got from the bottom of that order because those were delivering, and you know, the main guys are not going to not deliver all season. So but to see Hayward he’s been hitting very well this year. And I tell you what if you got Hayward down there seven eight nine nine in the batting order if they if they if moves a pitcher up or if it’s American League, or whatever I mean, you got that kind of production. That’s that’s going to be something. We know he’s going to he’s gonna regress to his me as we’ve talked about before elite hitter. He’s supposed to be in the league defender. Let’s what he’s supposed to be anyway. So that game had some really interesting aspects also in game one if I’m not mistaken, your hero havi by as baby bear didn’t. He also wear Goldensohn barrel. What is with your lineup? Having the main guys we’re golden some boroughs against this. Bruce pitching staff that has according to everybody. I talked to not looked good. They had the main guys. Really hasn’t looked back. Good. They they get lucky, you know, once in a while. Yeah. That hatred today was pure luck, bro. Broken clock. Well, we all know haters for real I think the young guys some things together. It’s gonna be interesting. What you need to worry about is your your aging and decrepit starting staff that’s my field. I know because hamels was just. Yeah. Your bright spot bright spun he’s considered one of the old pitchers. So are you still hot and sweaty for you Darvish because I didn’t even see him this weekend. What what was I didn’t see him this you’d want? Your your proverbial sei-yung candidate to be pitching against the arch rival team in the division last year. You know, that will hopefully that that will come up here at some point. I get tired about about that. And talking about we mentioned maybe about some predictions that finally since we’ve started this podcast addictions that have came to be. Yes, yes. We did have some that came to be. We talked about the games we talked about the verse winning two to three the ridiculous. Mona runs scored in the first two games. I think those were borderline records as well. There’s a whole bunch of crazy stuff. But yeah, let’s get to the meat of the matter. And that’s me against you. And see who got what rates? Yeah. Well. Yeah. Yeah. Well, it looks like we both each had. No. I know I did have one three I had four you only had three. Well, that’s because you backing up three jumped the gun a little bit and said you were going to sweep the cubs Ernest. Weep the brewers rise before we had decided to really focus on the series. So obviously all the way along I said that would end in game one which it did. Yeah. So so I made four predictions you made three predictions. So I’ll I think I think that’s how it wound up. Yeah. So my first one was well as originally Darvish, but then I switched to cantata will strike out ten or more brewers and their first meeting. Well that runs that was impressive. Did he have I look at the box for you. I suppose look here. Three three ks. So he got thirty percent of the way there that’s pretty self. If we go to one of my predictions. I’ll just get this one out of the way. Now, I had Christian yelich going five hundred with two home runs in the series. A bold prediction if I do say so myself, and I do say so myself he ended up four for nine. So I wasn’t far off on the five hundred. But I wasn’t quite there. Any ended up with one home run? He left a little short today. He had the opportunity pretty and slam pretty bad. Yeah. Yeah. Four for nine with, you know, five RBI in a home run. Couple runs scored in this series. Only one strikeout for our MVP versus the four that your guy had in one game. I don’t even know we’re havi ended up. Yeah. Yeah.

00:20:01 – 00:25:01

I was way off way bad on that. So are obviously the sweep cups. We brewers close. But you got lucky, but no. They got lucky twice. They took two out of three. Pretty pretty lucky with some weird things happening. But whatever. A lot of a lot of home runs. That was a little weird that was more than expected. Well, let’s let’s see cubs will score fifteen or more wasn’t that. And the in this three-game set that was scored fourteen yesterday. So they easily surpassed that you know. Yeah. I remember when I made that you were pretty. Now, you’re you’re kind of backpedaling you’re like well that wasn’t that bowl. That’s not that unrealistic prediction. But you you said otherwise when it was made you’re like, no. Well, yeah. The game, man. You’re a week one. Averaging five runs a game. I don’t know. I don’t think so. Mike take much it didn’t take much for that one to fall. If you wanna go that way. So you got one right there that I got right? What is that? I predicted and this I thought it was pretty bold at the time twenty seven or more combined hits for the brewers. Let’s take a look here game number three on Sunday. They had ten game number two on Saturday. They had ten game number one on Friday fifteen. They had thirty five hits in this series so easily clipped that. Lonnie eight. Okay. Yep. Well, the cubs had a game where they had more runs than hits. There’s a lot of walks in that particular contests. I think that was. Yeah. Yep. Yeah. So that is where that they’ve they even beat that as well. So let’s see how poorly pitched series was. Well, you made a prediction about the the brewers bullpen. Yeah. I don’t think they held it under two for the series right there. I predicted the brewers would have at two point. Oh, ERA or less from the bullpen this series. I’m not even gonna try and do the math. It doesn’t matter. It’s not even close. As much fun as I was having on Twitter, you know, posting pictures of a dumpster floating down, you know, the street that was flooded in saying that was you know, the Chicago river and that was the cubs bullpen on fire inside as much fun as as having with that the brewers bullpen wasn’t much better. So a whole lot yesterday. Sid Wilson six earned runs in point one innings pitched. Yeah. He got credit for loud or runs yesterday. He did. Yeah. That that hurts the. It hurts. The what was nice I thought junior garra wasn’t bad. You know, he gave up a couple of walks. Got a strike. Oh, I think I’m gonna like him in the roll out of the bullpen as opposed to starting Taylor. Williams needs to go back down to AAA which he did today. Get some work. They’re going to have answers. If I was a cubs fan. It’d be a lot more concerned because the brewers actually have pitching depth down there. Yes, they lost Jeffress and they lost Canabal. Well, guess what Jefferson is gonna come back will be the same guy. I don’t know. But at least there’s somebody there that you can, you know, have a little hope for and then you’ve got of course, Jimmy Nelson. What’s going to happen there? What do the cubs? Have that can put out the dumpster fire. That is their bullpen right now. Well, it oh, they got a number of them. Have the talent? It’s just you know, the got the talent they got the tools. Yeah. Yeah. It’ll come together. Not not too worried. They’ll gel they’ll jump guys were brought up. You know Webster and Ryan both you saw both yesterday. And today, I believe. Okay, ryan. But I was both look good today. Yesterday. I think oh Webster gave up a Ron. Yeah. And Ryan gave up a couple of runs. But all right. Well, I think that’s yeah. We’ve got one more one more prediction, and then maybe take a couple of parting shots, and then we’ll get out of here. Because we’ve got a a full episode where we can really delve into some more. Yeah. Absolutely. We’re going to get into that a little bit later in the main episode. This is just a just a couple of guys trying to give each other some crappy. Speaking of hobby by as havi of the golden sombrero, you had a prediction for him. Did you not? Yeah. Eight or more.

00:25:02 – 00:29:58

RBI’s that was bold. Yeah. It was also really wrong. How many did he have yet? He hit one home run one that squeaked out. And then did he have any other RBI? He had one RBI one Arbia. Okay. Yeah. So I would say I would say Mr. yellow had a little better series than Mr. by. And well, that’s I’m glad I got him with that ten th pick him fantasy draft. Glenn? Thank you. That was lucky lucky. Yeah. Whatever eulogise. Yeah. He’s just a really lucky guy. Just really really nice one. One of my four you got one of your three. All right. All right. So that sounds about right. So I’m hitting three thirty three on the predictions. That’s a hall of fame pace. I’ll take it. So I think the next ones that are to come to be. I see we got a couple and of April Anthony Rizzo seven plus it by pitches and brewers in the top three top three in use of the shift. One other thing is going to mention it’s funny because it did cross my mind to make some sort of prediction on this. And I wish I had but zobrist and Scelzo. Like the brewers play in the shift on them. It looks like. Sure, they can try and beat it. That’s fine. Zober from both sides of the plate actually, the brewers will adjust and they’re going to do a lot of shifting. I have no no issue with if somebody beats the shifts. You know, whatever that’s great. I think it’s good for the game. When people beat the shifts. I don’t know I agree. And and that’s what I like about zobrist. I mean, he really does that. Well. Yup. Well, in the other thing, I’d like to mention brawn and themes both hit home runs and back to back games that was really cool for the brew crew outside of that. I’m pretty much outta stuff other than it’s pretty obvious who the better team is. And that the come suck. Well, we got a series what in may. So it’s going to be a little while. But we’ll see where the standings are when they face each other knacks, and we’ll see we’ll see what’s going how how it’s going. And who the better team actually is? I think we’re gonna know all at the end of the season. You know, that’s all that matters. So it is all that matters. But it’s a lot of fun along the way, and it is I’m so happy with the start eight and two I would have gladly take an eight and two in a heartbeat. No matter it could have been two loss as the cubs. And I went to care at eighty to start this April with this schedule. Heck, yes, we’ll take it may tenth will be the next Chicago series at Wrigley. So we’ll do another one of these little drop most likely at the end of that series. We’ll have it on your note a little bit more definitely give each other a little more crap. But the good news is Ryan got to clean up Moster, really listen to the game today. So that’s a positive. Yeah. Well. A separate thing. But anyways, it it’s what I’m saying. Is there was something worse than the cubs losing happening. It makes you feel better about the loss. Well, I, you know, the bright side is a scored a lot of runs against a supposedly good pitching staff. But you know. Just say whatever you’d like to make you feel better. And allow you to sleep at night understand. It’s must be tough being a brewers fan. Not as tough as it’s going to be to be a cubs fan this year. Well, not for then pass stretches of cubs team. So I’m I’m not worried about it. Yeah. Because you are alive for most of that hundred years when they were losing, right? Never mind. Let’s get outta here. All right. We’re gonna be. Tune in. Yeah. Exhausting weekend but exacting weekend. We’ll continue this conversation. We’ll bring up some more specifics. And we’ll see see where things are at come. I suppose Wednesday Wednesday. Yeah. Let’s do it. We’ll have our normal ninety miles episode with tweet of the week all the breakdowns the historical aspect over the future aspect, depending on which way, we go the NL central stuff. But this was just an opportunity for me to tell Ryan cubs really do suck. And there’s your evidence. Have I can’t wait till the next after the next series out. It’ll be fun episode record, and yeah, thanks everybody. Good time and cubs cups of the best. And the brewers. Bye.
